More Than has announced it is exiting the car insurance market in a move that affects thousands of its customers.

Customers with a policy that is set to auto-renew will be moved automatically to Swinton Insurance. If you don’t want to move to Swinton, you’ll need to opt out for free before your current policy ends - otherwise you’ll be charged.

Once you’ve been switched over to Swinton, you'll have to pay £25 if you cancel within two weeks of this new policy starting, and £50 after that. If you’re happy to be transferred to Swinton, you don’t need to do anything, as your details will be automatically moved over - however, you should compare prices elsewhere before the policy starts so you’re getting the best deal.

More Than customers that aren’t scheduled to auto-renew will need to look for new insurance for when their current policy ends. More Than stopped selling car insurance to new and renewing customers on September 1, 2023.

On its website, More Than said: "From 1 September 2023, More Than no longer offers car insurance to new or renewing customers. If you're a current customer, there is no need to worry. Your car will continue to be insured and your cover will carry on as normal for your full policy year.

“You can get in touch with us to make a claim and make any other changes in all the usual ways. We will contact you in plenty of time before your renewal is due, with details about your options and what the next steps will be."

How to get cheapest car insurance

Car insurance is a legal requirement in the UK and has to be renewed yearly. The three main types are: third party, fire and theft and fully comprehensive.

If your car insurance is up for renewal, use a comparison website to check for prices - some of the most popular ones include Go Compare, Confused.com and Compare the Market. It is also worth checking quotes with some providers directly, as not all appear on comparison websites.

One of the most notable ones that doesn't appear is Direct Line. Once you’ve found the best deal elsewhere, call up your current provider to see if they will beat it. Martin Lewis ' MoneySavingExpert.com suggests 20 to 26 days before renewal is the best time to look for car insurance deals for the cheapest prices.
