Jodie Whittaker has revealed her huge shock after she discovered the huge Doctor Who while going through a show tradition.

The former BBC series star explained there is a sort of initiation process when it comes to one Doctor handing the reigns over to another. The 41-year-old revealed the current Doctor tends to get a phone call from the next person who is due to take over the role.

However, she explained she got quite the surprise when she received a phone call from David Tennant, who had already played the iconic character. It seems that Jodie wasn't aware that David would be reprising his role before Ncuti Gatwa would take over as Time Lord.

Speaking on Capital Breakfast with Roman Kemp, Sian Welby and Chris Stark, Jodie explained how the "initiation" happens. Roman asked: "Now Ncuti Gatwa is taking up the role, is there like a right of passage that has to happen. Did Peter Capaldi had something that he had to say to you?"

Jodie answered: "Peter [Capaldi] was told 'the next Doctor is going to call you' , and obviously – unless he deleted me – I was already in his phone, he was like 'oh my god', so then I had that, 'the next doctor's going to call you'. And that was David [Tennant]. So I lost my bleep, 'are you bleeping me? What the bleep are you doing calling me?' So that was my initial thing.

"So then obviously later down the line, Russel [T Davies] rang and went, 'I’ve got some news'. And, obviously Ncuti [Gatwa], is the busiest person in the world and at the time I think he was on 18 different sets, when he was like leading up to being announced, so he got about 15 nine minute messages off me from Whatsapp, and he was very kind to respond. But I am yet to meet him! But aye man, he needs no advice from me, he’s going to smash it."

Jodie played the part of The Doctor on the sci-fi franchise from 2017 to 2022 and was the first female in the role. Following her departure it was announced that David Tennant would return to the part after first playing it from 2005 to 2010 for a series of special episodes before the Time Lord regenerates once again.

The 52-year-old has returned to his iconic role for a three-part special in celebration of the show’s 60th anniversary. The first episode debuted on Saturday on BBC One, with two more yet to air.

Catherine Tate, who plays the iconic sidekick Donna Noble also came back to the series. Ncuti Gatwa will become the fifteenth doctor of the franchise and he will be joined by sidekick Millie Gibson, who is best known for being on Coronation Street.

Ncuti's first episode is set to air on Chirstmas Day 2023, with the rest of his first series coming to screens in 2024.
