Mainoo's "brilliant" debut could aid Ratcliffe's ruthless Man Utd decision
Sir Jim Ratcliffe could shake things up sooner rather than later at Manchester United once his takeover is completed.
The British billionaire will become a minority shareholder but is set to take charge of the club's football operations. His first show of ruthlessness could come in the January transfer window with talk of who might be moved on gathering momentum.
Casemiro, a summer signing last term, has underwhelmed so far this season. The Brazilian is north of 30, but defied the doubters in his debut campaign. This year his influence has dwindled though, and the Daily Mail reported a January exit was being considered.
The ex-Real Madrid man was a towering presence in midfield but with a potential exit being discussed United look to have unearthed a gem. Kobbie Mainoo made his first Premier League start in the win over Everton on Sunday and dazzled in the middle of the pitch.
The 18-year-old midfield anchor was among the standout individuals at Goodison Park and Gary Neville lauded his display, which came alongside Scott McTominay, who himself was firmly out of Erik ten Hag's plans before a renaissance this season.

Neville said on commentary: "There's an 18-year-old out there who looks more composed than anyone. Mainoo has been Manchester United's best player by a street. A brilliant, brilliant Premier League debut from him."

Roy Keane added: "We don't want to get too carried away but I'm sure we will. He looked like he always had time on the ball today, his decision-making, in terms of when to go long when to go short, in terms of off the ball as well. What an all-round performance.
"The club obviously think highly of him. With the build-up to the game today, coming to Everton, for the manager to put him in, he and the staff around the place obviously must trust him. Good luck to the kid. He was outstanding. It's a great start for him. Let's hope he stays injury-free and gets a run of games for Man Utd because he looked a Man Utd type of player. Nice and brave, lots of courage. I loved watching him."
Casemiro was a regular in United's midfield last term, often alongside Christian Eriksen. Sofyan Amrabat was signed in the summer on loan and has excelled for his country in that position, but found himself on the bench on Sunday. Mason Mount is also trying to find his home in this United XI after his switch from Chelsea, but Mainoo has now furthered the competition.
