New photos reveal the grim conditions inside a house where inspectors made a heartbreaking discovery.

The RSPCA's branch in Wirral and Chester rescued 40 cats living in "the most squalid conditions". The animals were all found to be in a poor state and very dirty, with many of them timid and untrusting of humans. One cat named Molly gave birth to her kittens inside a sofa at the house.

The RSPCA has since rescued all 40 cats, who have been well cared for over the past few months. They are now looking for new homes, with 28 cats currently listed on the animal charity's website.

Images from inside the home show a filthy bathroom with mess covering the floor, and a similar level of dirtiness in the kitchen, the Echo reported. In a Facebook post, RSPCA Wirral said: "These are just some of the 40 cats rescued by the Inspectors from the same home." They added that most of the cats have been taken in by them, while the rest have gone to other RSPCA centres.

"We have taken most of them and the remaining cats have gone to other RSPCA centres. They have come from the most squalid conditions, and quite understandably some are very timid and untrusting.", and noted that understandably, some are very timid and untrusting. They concluded by saying: "They were all in poor condition and very dirty. Poor Molly gave birth to her kittens inside a sofa. They all look a million dollars now having received lots of TLC over the last couple of months."

They added that some of the cats "remain very timid" and "will need experienced homes where they will be allowed to settle down and learn to trust us humans who have treated them so poorly." Dozens of people responded to the post, including some who had already given a home to cats from the animal charity.

One said: "Breaks my heart, so glad they're now safe." Another woman said: "Oh my gosh how that is awful, all them poor cats and kitties it's heartbreaking. I'm glad they are all being looked after now thankyou for everything you do RSPCA Wirral, you do a fantastic job looking after them all." A third added: "Oh my god what beautiful souls you have there. They are in the best, possible hands. They have suffered for the very last time ever! Calm, loving homes now forever." You can find out more about the cats that need rehoming on the RSPCA website.
