Whilst the public can visit some of the royal palaces, most of the private homes or rooms that the Royal Family occupy are hidden from view. The Prince and Princess of Wales in particular are understood to keep their home life behind closed doors as normal as possible for their three children: George, Charlotte, and Louis.

However, the unusual properties that the royals occupy are still often grander than most people's houses, and Adelaide Cottage in Windsor Great Park - where William and Kate moved last year - is a Grade-II listed property, which means it retains many of its original features and to make significant changes the couple would have to get permission.

The four-bedroom property on the 685-acre estate of Great Windsor Park is relatively modest by royal standards, and it's much smaller than the Wales' Kensington Palace apartment. But it still has some ornate and extravagant features you wouldn't find in many people's homes - including on the bedroom ceiling.

Kate and William's bedroom ceiling includes an intricate artwork of golden dolphins and a rope decoration made from rope taken from the Royal Yacht used in the 19th century. The cottage was originally built in 1831 as a retreat for Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV and aunt of Queen Victoria, who also enjoyed spending time there.

Built in the picturesque style, the property also features a Graeco-Egyptian marble fireplace and a decorated roofline and was reportedly constructed from reclaimed materials from the former Royal Lodge - according to Architectural Digest.

The home eventually became a 'grace and favour' property, after being used for many years to house important guests, which means that it was given to someone for use as a condition of their employment by the monarch. Before Kate and William moved in, it was the partial setting for one of the most scandalous royal love stories of the last century - between Princess Margaret, the late Queen's sister, and Group Captain Peter Townsend, who was equerry to the Queen and their late father, King George VI.

The Wales family moved to the four-bedroom home last year to ensure more privacy for their children than their London home afforded them, and to be closer to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away shortly after their move. Only a stone's throw away from Windsor Castle, where the late Queen had spent most of the Covid-19 pandemic, they were said to hope to be able to spend more time with her through the move.
