Groom leaves bride in tears after sharing heartwarming surprise on wedding day
Weddings are a celebration of love, not just for the couple but for everyone who comes to celebrate them. From sorting out the food to getting your hair and makeup done, one of the most nerve-wracking elements of the day has to be the speeches.
For Ben Carpenter, his speech in front of his bride Sohee, their family, friends, and his new in-laws was almost a year in the making. Sharing a video of the adorable address on social media, Ben, a personal trainer from the UK, wrote next to it: “For nearly a year, I have been keeping a big secret from my wife.
“I kept sneaking off for 30 minutes at a time for video calls she didn’t know about, or pretending they were for work when they weren’t. In bed, I would often put one headphone in so she couldn’t hear what I was doing, and turn my screen away so she couldn’t see either.

“I set myself a goal of learning just a teeny tiny bit of Korean as a show of respect to her and her family on our wedding day. I wasn’t originally planning on sharing this video from a couple of months ago, because I try to make social media about posting educational content for you all. But, it seems silly not to share one of the most important days of my life.”
'I'm spending £20k on a new bathroom - but won't help my brother out with cash'
Shared on TikTok and Instagram, the speech has collectively learned almost 80,000 likes and 2 million views. Korean American Sohee, who is also a sports trainer, wrote underneath the post: “I love our love, can’t believe we get to share this for the rest of our lives. every day with you feels like a dream.”
In the video, Ben starts by thanking the guests who have travelled hundreds and thousands of miles to America to celebrate his and Sohee’s wedding in California. As he continues making some jokes in the speech, he reveals that he and his wife had been talking for months about how it would be “cute” for him to learn a few Korean words to sprinkle in.
He adds: “But I looked at the Korean alphabet and I realised it wasn't going to be the easy tasks that I had hoped. So please forgive me for how much I will butcher this.”
Launching into Korean, his bride, and her parents were visibly moved as he thanked them for welcoming him into their family and for bringing up such an amazing woman as Sohee. After finishing his speech there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Sohee’s parents got up to hug their new son-in-law.
Strangers to the couple who watched Ben’s video were equally moved and rushed to congratulate them. One person wrote: “Every once in a while, a post comes along that demonstrates that social media is not an absolute s**t show 100 per cent of the time. This video is one of those examples that moved me to tears. All for people I’ve never met but am genuinely rooting for their happiness and success.”
Another viewer added: “Long time follower, first-time commenter. I’m literally trying to get to the gym but sitting here sobbing right now. I’ve been studying Korean on my own for the last month with hopes to move there and this was just such a beautiful display of your love.” And someone else gushed: Goddamn! Ben is out here debunking exercise and nutrition myths and also proving true love exists.”
