Serious questions have been put to Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney after the club's stadium announcer, dubbed ‘the voice of the Racecourse’, revealed he is 'no longer associated with the club'.

Steve Jones, who has held the position for years and took over the role from his dad, posted on social media to announce he was ‘devastated’ to no longer conduct announcing duties at the Racecourse Ground. He said: "Devastated to say I am no longer associated with Wrexham AFC. I have no further comment to make."

Red Dragons fans immediately leapt to his defence, with many aiming their frustrations at Hollywood duo Reynolds and McElhenney.

Season ticket holder Colin Boote posted on X: “Bloody hell Steve. You (and your Dad before you) were the voice of y Cae Ras. You did a brilliant job at the remembrance match v Gillingham. Hope you’re ok pal and best wishes for the future.”

Meanwhile, @pdrussell posted: “As an avid viewer of the series, supporter of the team from afar and all round football fan, I feel qualified to say ‘WHHHAATTTT?’ #wrexham @VancityReynolds”

Another user, The Davies Locker (@TheDaviesLocker), expressed dismay at the decision and suggested the American owners need to fix the issue. The account added: “Absolutely THE VOICE of the Cae Ras. All the best to you mate, not sure what’s gone on but @VancityReynolds, @RMcElhenney, and @thehymphreyker need to rectify this sharpish. #OneOfOurOwn.”

Wrexham’s owners are yet to speak out on Jones losing his job but on Monday the club did announce it was close to purchasing the lease for the Racecourse Ground. The surrender of the lease is required by the club to enable the funding for development of the Kop stand, which will help secure UEFA Stadium Category 4 status as Wrexham continue to look to the future.

As part of the deal, the League 2 side - which lost 2-0 to Accrington Stanley on the weekend - will make a payment of £187,000 upon surrender of the lease, a payment of £1,000 per year (increasing by 3% annually) and meet the legal costs of the Wrexham Supporters’ Trust connected with the surrender of the lease. If secured, Wrexham are set to continue playing at the Racecourse Ground until June 30 2115.

In a statement, co-chairmen Reynolds and McElhenney said: “We were delighted to receive the support of the Directors of the WST and share their understandable desire to protect the long-term future of the Club. Our legacy at the Club will not be defined while we are its custodians, so we wanted to address the anomaly in the WST lease for the Racecourse Ground that did not include the requirement for the team to actually play at the stadium, only not allow it to be used for any other purpose. We didn’t want anyone in the future to be able to exploit that position.

“The payment of £187,000, is an equivalent amount to that contributed by fans to save the Club. To know that we will provide the funding to effectively pay everyone back who contributed to save the Club is worth every penny and gives us a great deal of satisfaction. We would appeal to the 824 members who have a vote, to do so in favour of the proposal and allow the Club to continue on this wonderful journey we are all on.”

Wrexham are next in action against Morecambe at the Racecourse on Saturday.
