Trafalgar Square in London was evacuated by police this evening after reports of a suspect package being found.

People in the area took to social media to share photos and videos from the chaotic scenes as police try to move people away.

Lilly Croucher wrote on X - formerly known as Twitter: "Evacuation near Trafalgar Square for a suspect package. Just been pulled out of the Pret. William IV Street cordoned off by @metpoliceuk in London." While Ste wrote: "Charing Cross Road and Trafalgar Square all closed off to vehicles and pedestrians - suspicious package. Police bomb van on scene."

A Met Police spokesman said: "At 17.42pm on Saturday, 18 November an officer on patrol in William IV Street, Westminster spotted an item that was deemed suspicious. The area was cordoned off and specialist officers were deployed to carry out an examination.

"While the item was not dangerous and posed no risk to the public, initial enquiries suggest it was left there intentionally to provoke concern. Officers from the Central West Command Unit are carrying out an investigation.

"All cordons have been lifted."
