Many royal fans were shocked when they found out that the children of the Prince and Princess of Wales would be going to a school where they were expected to attend on a Saturday, as well as a normal week.

The royal couple announced the move for their three children last year. The school, Lambrook, is very close to their home Adelaide Cottage, on the Windsor Estate. The private independent preparatory school has a host of wonderful facilities, but many people got a surprise on hearing the children would be adding a day to the normal school week of Monday to Friday.

However all has been revealed about the famous school by Managing Editor of The Good Schools Guide, Melanie Sanderson, who has told why Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis attend school at the weekend. Melanie said: "It's intense. For the younger ones, for the six and seven-year-olds, it's a really long week."

She told Hello magazine that having even one day off may be too much for the royal trio. The Berkshire institution is set in 52 acres of countryside with facilities that include a golf course, swimming pool, theatre, sports centre, as well as various art studios. And classes at Lambrook are not what you'd expect to see at an average British school.

The school itself, which has been operating in one form or another since 1860, also educated two of Queen Victoria’s grandsons, Prince Christian Victor and Prince Albert of Schleswig-Holstein, who attended in 1878. And Lambrook states on its website that: "Children have one opportunity for an education which will form the basis of their lives and, at the same time, one childhood. Lambrook aims to keep a happy balance between the two."

Melanie added: "We know the royals love being outdoors. They love the countryside and it's a real muddy-knees type of school. They've got acres and acres of pitches and fields to explore and they're allowed free rein in their break times."

And with all of that outdoors beckoning, the school may sound like a dream place to attend for most UK pupils, but William and Kate also made sure that while being at the plush school, their children would understand the importance of public service and how their future roles would require them to accept that.

Melanie added: "Lambrook does lots and lots of fundraising for the community. They are very focused on making sure that their pupils understand how privileged they are. Everything we hear about Princess William and Princess Catherine indicates that that's really important to them too.

"You can see how hands-on they are just from seeing them on TV. They will have been very keen to choose a school for the three youngsters that was a very close fit with their own family values. And I think Lambrook really fits the bill."
