NFL analyst Bill Simmons has explained why he doubts Aaron Rodgers will return from an Achilles injury next month.

The New York Jets quarterback sustained an Achilles injury in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL regular season against the Buffalo Bills. Rodgers featured in just four plays on his debut for the Jets following his offseason trade from the Green Bay Packers, before he was carted off the field for further treatment.

During Rodgers' absence, backup quarterback Zach Wilson has been stepping in to fill the void left by the four-time MVP's injury. Wilson, a No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has completed five touchdown passes with six interceptions during his nine games for the Jets this season.

Rodgers underwent surgery on Sept. 13 and has since been gradually building up his rehabilitation. The veteran quarterback has frequently provided updates on when he is planning to return to the field, provided the recovery process goes to plan.

The most recent update came on Sunday night as the Jets faced the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. Rodgers was on the sidelines wearing a headset as he offered his insight and support to his Jets teammates.

During the game, NBC reporter Melissa Stark said she had spoken to Rodgers on the Jets sideline. It was during the chat that Stark provided an update on Rodgers' recovery, where he is said to have stated his intention to return to the field in mid-December.

Stark said during NBC's coverage on Sunday: "He [Rodgers] said, ‘I know it sounds insane, but you do a good surgery, you have a good patient, it makes this possible'."

The update from Rodgers led to Simmons giving his opinion on the latest episode of his podcast on The Ringer. Simmons would go on to reference the recent hype around dating rumors concerning Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and world-famous pop star Taylor Swift while making his argument as to why he thinks Rodgers will not be returning from his injury this year.

Simmons said: "Can we stop with the Rodgers comeback? Do we have to do this as a news story?

"And we have to show on the sidelines and the sideline reporter with the 'I talked to Aaron Rodgers, and he said it's going really well and he can do this and he can do that'. Aaron Rodgers is not playing football this year, why are we doing this?

"He's intentionally, especially as the Kelce-Taylor Swift relationship goes bonkers. It's like 'Ah, I gotta leak that my Achilles [and that] I might be back in mid-December'. There's no way.

"There's ten times a game where the quarterback has to quickly pivot and scramble out. His leg is not gonna be ready for that, just stop."
