Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have backed Rasmus Hojlund to find his scoring boots in the Premier League, with the Manchester United striker still without a top-flight goal.

United signed him from Atalanta for £72million in the summer, but he has so far failed to live up to that price tag. The 20-year-old has shown bright flashes of his talent, as well as scoring five times in the Champions League group stages.

But as he is United's starting striker, much more is expected of him, with Erik ten Hag 's side in general struggling for goals. He drew another blank in the win over Luton on Saturday, missing a glorious chance to finally break his duck in the early stages of the game.

The United star eventually had to be substituted due to a hamstring injury. When he returns, both Lineker and Shearer are adamant that he is capable of being a top scorer in the Premier League, despite his current struggles.

Lineker told The Rest is Football podcast: "Imagine when they start scoring. I like his movement, I think the goals will come. He certainly should have scored one yesterday [against Luton], but he has scored five goals in the Champions League this season, which is an unusual way round to do it."

Shearer agreed with the former Barcelona star but admitted that he felt sorry for the 20-year-old and the position he has been put in. The Newcastle legend insisted that United need to sign a new starting forward so that Hojlund can find his feet.

"I feel a bit sorry for him. He shouldn’t be in the position he is in, in terms of the fee that’s been paid for him and the pressure that is on him. He should be one that is in, then out, using him as a substitute and starting him here and there," Shearer added.

"They should have a big hitter in there so I do have a bit of sympathy for him. I do see that there is a potential goal-scorer in there. He will be having sleepless nights because of what is happening in front of goal in the Premier League. It looks like he'll be injured now with his hamstring, but there's definitely something there."

Hojlund does look set for a spell on the sidelines as Shearer feared, with the striker pulling out of Denmark's squad for the upcoming international break. Ten Hag also believes that Hojlund will soon come good, insisting his confidence is growing.

"We needed the win and we got it but we could make life more easy by scoring early on and getting a second. We created the chances but we didn't score apart from one. I am happy with that and I am happy with the clean sheet," the United boss said.

"We had many chances before half time and you should net one of them. Rasmus Hojlund has scored five times in the Champions League. He has the confidence and the goals will come.

"It would be better for composure, for the calmness, for the manager, the coaches and the team if we score early on, but if you don’t you have to keep going. I have to compliment the team that they kept going, kept organised and didn’t give anything away."
