Great British Bake Off viewers fume over 'car crash' technical challenge

Fuming viewers criticised The Great British Bake Off, claiming contestants were "set up to fail" on Tuesday.

As the bakers dived head first into Dessert Week, Paul Hollywood asked them to create multiple steamed treacle puddings in one hour and thirty minutes in the latest episode on Channel 4. The technical challenge turned out to be quite difficult due to the short time period, with most of the bakers producing raw and undercooked puddings.

However, many fans couldn't help but defend the contestants and instead criticised the show for making it "borderline impossible." Taking to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, fans let out their frustrations with the programme. One person typed on X: "Set up to fail. Not enough time given when they all practically serve up under baked treacle puds #bakeoff."

Another chimed in: "They need a pressure cooker or more time!! Ridiculous challenge. #bakeoff." A third commented: "Maybe if Paul Hollywood set a technical with a REASONABLE time limit, instead of making it borderline impossible for most people, the bakers would perform somewhere above "terrible". They do this every year. #bakeoff."

A fourth said: "I'd like to know how long it took to make the ones that Prue & Paul showed ahead of the challenge? I suspect it was more than 90 mins & that the person making it was given full instructions." Another viewer wrote: "I think that counts as poor challenge setting. Give them enough time to give them a chance! (Funny though!)."

Another echoed similar sentiments, stating: "Maybe if they've all mostly failed it wasn't the bakers fault, it was the task and recipe set." Despite the technical challenge being described as a "car crash", one viewer did say: "That was the happiest technical EVER and certainly brought everyone together."

Sadly for Saku, her night of baking went all wrong as her treacle pudding was undercooked and her showstopper fell apart. The judges decided she had to go – leaving her proud, but devastated. As she exited the show, Saku said she would miss her fellow contestants most of all. She said: "I’m so proud of myself. I don’t miss baking but I will miss them. It’s really sad to leave them. It’s a privilege to be a part of this lovely family."

In an exit letter, she went on to list all the highlights of her experience on the Channel 4 show. She wrote: "What a rollercoaster ride it was! Since I submitted my Bake Off application just a few hours before the deadline until the day I left the big white tent in week 7, I had the most wonderful experiment (and terrifying too) in my life.

"I have: gained lifelong friendships with 11 amazingly talented bakers and one ver special interpreter, judged by 2 most knowledgable judges, had the best time with 2 most cheeky presenters, received love and support from a big bunch of crew, made 1000s of most loveliest memories, gained courage and confidence, been receiving endless love across the world."

The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 on Tuesdays at 8pm.
