Liverpool warned Salah is in 'last year' at club after Saudi transfer interest

Liverpool are likely to lose star man Mohamed Salah at the end of the season, according to broadcaster Richard Keys.

The Reds tied Salah down to a new contract in 2022, with the deal - which runs until the end of the 2024-25 season - cementing him as the highest-earning player in the club's history. That didn't stop clubs showing interest 12 months later, though, even if efforts to bring the Egyptian to the Saudi Pro League fell short.

Al-Ittihad, who won the Saudi title last season, came in with a bid worth up to £150m towards the end of the transfer window. Liverpool might have said no on that occasion, but Keys doesn't believe the pursuit is over.

"Are we looking at him in his last year at Liverpool? I think the answer probably is yes," Keys said on beIN Sports during a discussion with Andy Gray.

"He's never had a sniff of the very big honours despite being very impactful in the English game. He's never got near the big prizes, has he? I'm talking Ballon d'Or!

"When you think about his contribution, he has been sensational, and I'm not sure we ever give him the credit. We talk in glowing terms about him but have we given him the credit that perhaps he should have had? Because he's been right up there with the very best at Liverpool."

After signing his new deal, Salah went on to score 30 goals in all competitions for Liverpool last season - the third successive campaign in which he hit the milestone. It wasn't enough for a top-four finish, though, leaving the Reds battling for the Europa League rather than the Champions League this term.

Salah is already into double figures in all competitions this time around, including eight goals in the league. Only Erling Haaland scored more in the Premier League across its first 10 gameweeks.

"If we considered leaving LFC this year, we wouldn’t have renewed the contract last summer," Salah's agent Ramy Abbas Issa wrote on social media over the summer when the first Saudi links began to surface. "Mohamed remains committed to LFC."

Al-Ittihad could yet come back in for the star in 2024. Nuno Espirito Santo's team strengthened over the summer with the addition of 2022 Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema and former Chelsea star N'Golo Kante, among others, but sit 11 points adrift of Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal following a five-game winless run.
