Seven years later, The Crown is set to release its sixth and final season - and it could be the most dramatic yet. The hit Netflix show has gripped both royalists and royal sceptics as it has followed the late Queen Elizabeth II's reign and the Royal Family over historic decades.

Series five was one of the darkest as it charted the Monarch's 'annus horribilis', Prince Charles and Princess Diana's messy divorce, her controversial BBC Panorama interview and the close relationship between Prince Philip and Penny Brabourne. It also introduced a new cast who will reprise their roles for the latest series set to drop on November 16 - with Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty, Dominic West as the then-Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki as Diana.

The new season will also debut newcomers Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy who will portray the blossoming romance between Prince William and Kate Middleton, while Luther Ford will take over in part two - which will air later in December - as adult Prince Harry. The series finale is also set to movingly pay tribute to the late Queen with the return of earlier Queen actors Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.

It is also set to cover the tragic death of Princess Diana and the wedding of Charles and Camilla. Across the series, several shocking revelations have been brought into the spotlight, leaving some viewers questioning how fabricated the events are and if the Royal Family have indeed seen it for themselves.

Earlier this month, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed that Prince Harry had no involvement in the storylines despite his previous deal for his documentary on the streaming platform with wife Meghan. He told Variety: "We keep a wall around this topic when we talk for obvious reasons." In light of the highly-anticipated The Crown returning to screens later this month, the Mirror takes a look at bombshells yet to come - from Princess Diana's ghost to conspiracy claims surrounding her sudden death.

Conspiracy claims

The sixth series is set to cover the tragic death of Princess Diana - who died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. Diana was killed in the car alongside boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed, and the driver Henri Paul. The only survivor was bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, who was hospitalised for two months with severe injuries and said he didn't remember what happened.

Despite those involved in the production of The Crown sworn to secrecy of its contents, The Sun reports that the new series will showcase claims that the late Princess was killed by an 'establishment plot', with Harrods boss Mohamed Al-Fayed, played by Salim Daw, is heard suggesting the royal was killed in a plot to stop her marrying his son Dodi. "This is likely to enrage the Prince of Wales, who has been upset by many Crown storylines that have featured his mother," a Netflix source told The Sun.

Diana's 'ghost'

The Daily Mail also claims Princess Diana appears as a ghost after the car crash scenes. She reportedly shares an emotional reconciliation with her grieving ex Charles and then appears again as a so-called phantom before the Queen as the pair discuss funeral arrangements.

The character of the late princess reportedly reduces the Queen to tears, with her stating she had started a 'revolution' with the mourning public lining the streets. According to the clip, Diana says: "I know it must be terrifying... As long as anyone can remember you've taught us what it means to be British. Maybe it's time to show you're ready to learn too."

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told MailOnline that "the idea that they have even contemplated Diana as a ghost seems absolutely weird". However, creator Peter Morgan said he never intended for the unusual appearance to be interpreted as a ghost.

"I never imagined it as Diana's ‘ghost’ in the traditional sense," Morgan told Variety. "It was her continuing to live vividly in the minds of those she has left behind. Diana was unique, and I suppose that’s what inspired me to find a unique way of representing her. She deserved special treatment narratively."

'Pregnancy'

Alongside the plot reportedly raising the conspiracy claims around Di's untimely death, the character is also portrayed as being pregnant at the time of her passing. She was in a relationship with Dodi at the time, therefore he is hinted as being the father of the unborn child.

Royal commentator Mr Fitzwilliams told the Mail: "It is going to be a controversial series anyways with what they are already showing - the Panorama documentary, her death and the funeral - and in my opinion, it should never have made this final series in the first place."

It's unknown which royals, if any, have sat down and watched The Crown, but several have spoken out about it. Last year, before he ascended to the throne, King Charles reportedly privately insisted the way he is portrayed on the show is "nowhere near" what he is really like in real life.

According to the Daily Mail, leader of the Scottish Labour party, Anas Sarwar revealed Charles made a quip about the show when he attended a multi-faith event before the opening of the Scottish Parliament in 2021. Appearing at an event at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Mr Sarwar said: "There was a group of MSPs all standing and he came over and went, 'hello, nice to meet you all' and he went, 'I'm nowhere near how they portray me on Netflix'. I thought that was a really interesting way of how you describe yourself."

However, Prince Harry has confessed he has watched the show - and says it is more accurate than people think. During an interview with James Corden, he explained it is "loosely based on the truth."

He added: "They don't pretend to be news, it's fictional but it's loosely based on the truth. Of course, it's not strictly accurate, but loosely, it gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle, what the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else, what can come from that. "I am way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing the stories written about my family, or my wife or myself."
