Gary Neville said he was "done" with VAR after Anthony Gordon's goal against Arsenal on Saturday was checked at Stockley Park.

Gordon gave Newcastle the lead during the second half of the Premier League game after Gunners goalkeeper David Raya fluffed Joe Willock's cross. Gordon was alive in the box and tapped the loose ball home to make it 1-0 to the hosts at St James' Park.

But Newcastle's celebrations were put on hold when the VAR official checked the goal. They firstly checked to see if Willock had kept the ball in play before making sure Joelinton, who was involved in the build-up, and Gordon were both onside.

Much to Newcastle's relief, the goal was given. Yet Neville was far from impressed with Raya and the review. The Manchester United legend said on commentary: "It's close (to going out of play). It’s very, very close. But what’s not in doubt is the goal itself.

"Raya underneath it, he makes a mess of it, Gabriel might be whining about a push in the back but there’s nothing in that for me. That’s not a free kick for me from Joelinton, I just think Gabriel leans forward to head the ball and stoops down and misses it.

"That’s a natural jump for the ball, I’m not having that one at all. [Offside check] Just let me know when they’re finished, will you? I’m done with this, I’m finished. Gabriel has gone forward himself to head the ball, throwing his legs into Joelinton so it’s not a push.

"He could be offside now, I’m not sure. I haven’t got a clue. VAR at Stockley Park have just asked for extra time - and they’ve given it (the goal)."

Former Newcastle winger Chris Waddle was surprised the goal Gordon's goal stood. He told BBC Radio 5 Live on commentary shortly before the VAR check: "I think there will be a VAR check on this because a lot of things happened throughout that move.

"There were pushes, the ball looked like it may have gone out of play from Murphy's shot, then the challenge... from Joelinton almost on the goal line."

Joelinton appeared to push Gabriel Magalhaes in the back before nodding the ball down into Gordon's path for a tap in. Arsenal fans were furious with VAR's decision not to award a foul on Gabriel. Many of them also believe the ball went out of play.

When the goal was confirmed, Waddle added: "Wow. It's great for the game to have a goal, but how can you give that? Wow. There haven't been a lot of talking points in this game so far. Well, we have a big one now."

Newcastle went on to win the game 1-0 thanks to Gordon's goal. The result leaves Arsenal third in the table, three points behind leaders Manchester City. Newcastle, meanwhile, have jumped up to sixth - just four points behind the Gunners.
