Amy Dowden on 'tough' year after cancer diagnosis as she shares treatment update

Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden spoke of her hope she had "done enough" to battle her cancer, as she gave an update on her treatment during Channel 4's Stand Up To Cancer on Friday night.

The special night of programming and fundraising returned to screens, with hosts including Davina McCall urging viewers to raise what they could in the fight against cancer. Hoping to raise funds to help find new treatments, Channel 4 aired special shows and interviews with some huge names teaming up to "fight" against the disease.

One star who appeared on the show was Amy, who herself has been battling cancer since earlier this year. Amy was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in April after discovering a lump on her breast.

Amy underwent a mastectomy and surgeons removed three tumours and further cancer specks, plus some lymph nodes from her right breast. But days afterwards, doctors discovered a second type of breast cancer in the tissue they removed, plus more tumours, including one close to her chest, and specks in her other breast.

After gruelling treatment, which Amy has publicly spoken about amid her aims to raise awareness of the disease and to encourage people to check for lumps, Amy is hopeful she will be given the all clear. Speaking to Davina on the show, she shared an update on her treatment and her hopes she'd "done enough".

Asked how she was doing, she told Davina: "Today is a good day. I have got my last chemotherapy session on Thursday, I can ring that chemotherapy bell. It's been the toughest year of my life.

"I'm hoping with the surgery I've had and the chemotherapy, that I have done enough. It's been tough, I've had sepsis, blood clots, I've had hormonal treatment and was put into menopause."

"When I was sat in that room and the doctor said Amy, yes you have got cancer, that was one stab. And then it's, 'what’s your fertility plans?', they needed to shut my ovaries down basically. It's heartbreaking. Emotionally, it's been so tough."

Earlier this year Amy revealed she was undergoing IVF to create and freeze embryos earlier this year, hoping she and Ben might still have children. After two cycles of chemotherapy which did not go as hoped, she was taken to hospital where she battled sepsis and blood clots.

Amy revealed she was doing well in a recent update, with her managing to return to Strictly to join her co-stars. Amy now hopes after her final session of treatment this week, she will be well enough to go back to the show before it ends.
