Former New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski believes head coach Bill Belichick can revitalise the team’s form, with a couple of key ingredients that has been part of the franchise's decades of success.

The Patriots have endured a difficult - and unfamiliar - start to the 2023 NFL regular season, winning just two of their first seven games and they sit bottom of the AFC East division behind the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and the Miami Dolphins.

Week 7 saw the Patriots claim an important 29-25 win against the Bills at Gillette Stadium, a first win since the second game of the year, which came against the Jets.

It means both of the Patriots’ wins this season have come against their AFC East divisional rivals but they have work to do if they are to make an unexpected push for the play-offs.

Prior to the victory over Buffalo, there was increasing scrutiny around Belichick and his position as head coach. The 71-year-old has been in charge since 2000, but the 1-5 start was the worst in his time at the franchise.

In the build-up to the game with the Bills it emerged that Belichick had signed a contract extension to remain in Foxborough for the foreseeable future.

Gronkowski is widely regarded as one of the best tight ends in recent NFL history. The future Hall of Famer won four Super Bowls across his career, three coming with the Patriots while the other came during his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

After retiring from the NFL in June 2022, he has now spoken about the current fortunes of his old team, explaining what Belichick used to do when he was with the Patriots during tough spells, as well as explaining why the victory over the Bills can kickstart the team’s season.

"They could definitely build off that momentum now, and do a little damage this year,” Gronkowski told .

"He'll [Belichick] keep it together, that's for sure. If there's one thing that he taught us, it's to always black out the outside noise. So, I'm 100 percent sure that's what he's doing."

"They're just going through a rough patch right now," Gronkowski added. "I'm sure they're going to bounce back."

Next up for the Patriots is a tough road game against AFC East divisional rivals the Dolphins at Hard Stadium. Miami is currently the highest-scoring team in the league but was beaten 31-17 by the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7 last Sunday.

The Patriots will then face a home double-header in Weeks 9 and 10 against the Washington Commanders and the Indianapolis Colts. That will be followed with a bye week, before returning to the field in Week 12 against the New York Giants on November 26.
