Anyone looking for their new battle royale fix might wish to check out the open beta for the new colourful shooter from Embark Studios.

Xbox offered viewers a litany of surprises yesterday as part of its very first Xbox Partner Preview showcase. Chief among them was news that The Finals – the upcoming free-to-play combat shooter from Embark Studios – will be receiving a new open beta. The game, so far, promises to rival the likes of Fortnite and Overwatch 2, with its bright colour palette, boisterous characters, and fast-paced gunplay. The game is still without an official release date, hence why The Finals open beta might be your last chance in a while to try it out.

The Finals open beta is available on PS5 and Xbox Series X as well as on PC, supporting full cross-platform play to make duking it out with friends and trying to reach the titular finals all the more thrilling. However, if you’re unsure about The Finals open beta release date, start time, how to register or what it includes, we’re going to save you some hassle and break it all down for you.

The Finals open beta: start time and release date

The Finals open beta officially went live for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC (via Steam) today at 10:30am BST / 5.30am EDT / 2.30am PDT. That means that anyone who owns any of the above platforms and wants to jump into the colourful combat gameshow fun can do so right now.

The official window for how long The Finals open beta will remain available for is confirmed to be between Thursday, October 26 and Thursday, November 2. Developer Embark Studios is yet to reveal exactly what time on that Thursday the open beta will close, but we’ll keep you posted should we learn more.

The Finals open beta: what’s included and battle pass rewards

Players who jump into The Finals open beta will find a bounty’s worth of content to dive into, which developer Embark Studios describes in its accompanying press release as “a sneak peek at the unparalleled chaos and destruction”. Here’s what’s included in The Finals open beta according to the developers themselves:

Iconic Arenas

  • Skyway Stadium (new) — Experience the ever-changing Skyway Stadium, where players can test their limits in this treacherous playground.
  • Monaco — Play through the cobblestone streets of Monaco, making it a perfect map for destruction and closed-quartered combat.
  • Seoul — Fight atop towering skyscrapers in downtown Seoul with fast paced, vertical gameplay. Be careful to watch where you step so you don’t fall.

New and Updated Game Modes

  • Bank-It (new) — Four teams of three battle it out for coins in this casual-friendly, combat-focused mode. The team that reaches the max limit first, or the team with the most cash banked at the end of the round, wins.
  • Unranked Tournament — A Cashout mode where four teams of three compete to find cashboxes and deposit them in vaults, in an unranked tournament format with three rounds and 24 players in total.
  • Ranked Tournament — A Cashout mode with four teams of three in a ranked tournament format with four rounds and 48 players in total.
  • Quick Cash — A casual-friendly variant of Cashout in a 3v3v3 format. This mode has longer matches, faster respawn timers, faster extraction times and only one vault at a time.
  • Practice Range — A place for contestants to test weapons, gadgets, movement—and of course, destruction.

Contestant Progression

  • The free Open Beta Battle Pass will include 16 exclusive rewards that, if unlocked, will be transferred to the full game at launch
  • Item progression will include 5 Mastery Levels per weapon

League Progression

  • Five Leagues — (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond) will include permanent rewards for each tier, along with an exclusive Legendary Diamond Weapon Skin reward for contestants who reach Diamond tier.
  • Even More Content — The open beta will feature 20 Weapons, 26 Gadgets and 9 abilities for contestants to choose from, as well as improvements to performance, movement, teamplay, and more.

The Finals release date has yet to be confirmed, but you can be sure that Embark Studios plans on taking the feedback it'll receive from this open beta and pouring it into the full, final game. Until then, time will tell whether The Finals has what it takes to compete with the battle royale bigwigs.
