Ryan Reynolds' Wrexham gamble vindicated as 'losing interest' theory dismissed
The Wrexham bandwagon is still very much rolling despite accusations their Hollywood owners were 'losing interest' in the League Two club.
Last season's National League title win attracted frenzied media attention given the involvement of A-list celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. And the success was followed by a trophy parade through the city in north Wales, while squad members were also treated to a summer trip to Las Vegas as Reynolds and McElhenney honoured a previous promise.
Welcome to Wrexham, documenting the rise of the club since the owners made their purchase in November 2020, also proved popular on Disney Plus. A second series has since been released after the initial version was nominated for six Emmy awards.
But despite the Dragons making a positive start to life back in the Football League, attention around the club has simmered somewhat. And in the summer, Reynolds and McElhenney expanded their sporting ventures by investing in F1 outfit Alpine.
It led to suggestions that Wrexham was no longer an immediate priority. Skipper Ben Tozer however, is less than concerned, and has rubbished suggestions that the motivational levels of the famous duo had dropped.

“The interest is still there, there are still a lot of American fans outside the ground daily – after training, before training," Tozer told . "It’s all still pretty much there but it’s never going to be kept to those levels (of last season)."

The 33-year-old was speaking ahead of Wrexham's home game with Sutton United on Tuesday, which they won 2-1 at the Racecourse courtesy of an 89th minute winner from Elliot Lee. The result leaves Phil Parkinson's side third in the table, five points off leaders Stockport County.
But despite the continued progress, Tozer argued the current division has proved a big step-up from the National League: “I’ve been in the league before and there is a lot more quality that comes off the bench, there is a bit more tactical nous," he said.
"The players are a lot fitter in this league, so last year we were blowing teams away with 10-15 minutes to go. The crowds are bigger. It’s an all round better league and we are enjoying it.”
