Emmerdale's David Metcalfe faces heartbreak and betrayal in tragic exit plot

Emmerdale boss Laura Shaw has teased David Metcalfe's devastating exit storyline on the ITV soap, hinting it could cause huge drama for one family.

David actor Matthew Wolfenden recently announced he was leaving the ITV show after 17 years. It's been teased that David's son Jacob Gallagher and his ex Victoria Sugden could be tied into this departure storyline.

Jacob and Victoria recently began a secret romance, amid David hoping to get back with Victoria. It seems he will learn the heartbreaking truth though, and it will lead to his exit in devastating scenes.

It seems it will risk a fallout in Jacob's family as their romance upsets Jacob's mother Leyla Harding, and sends David "on his way". But will David and Jacob be able to fix things before he goes?

Speaking to Inside Soap magazine, Laura spilled on what was ahead and teased how David could leave the show. She said: "I think it would be difficult for me to pretend that this isn't going to send David on his way. However, once it comes out – and I'm sure Leyla won't be happy, either – will Jacob and Vic stay together, or will the pressure break them up?"

It was confirmed earlier this year that Matthew was leaving the role of David after 17 years. Matthew fought back tears in a recent This Morning interview as he discussed his exit.

After watching his best bits on Emmerdale, Matthew got teary as he said: "That made me really emotional! I am so nervous about leaving, nearly 20 years, almost two decades. It feels like the right time, the door has been left open – they're not killing me off, I've been promised. Who knows, I might be back [in the future]. Yeah, but we will see."

Matthew then struggled to speak as he got choked up again, saying: "I'm still really emotional watching that" to which he was given a tissue, he added that Emmerdale is a "massive" part of his life." He continued: "I met my wife on the show [Charley Webb, who played Debbie Dingle], we've had three kids, so not only has it given me 18 years of an amazing job, it's given me a family so to leave it, it's been a big part of my life and the most wonderful 18 years."

Teasing his character's exit storyline, Matthew said there could be resolution between David and Victoria Sugden. He said: "There is a resolution of sorts... I can't give too much away. Victoria is the reason why he leaves the village... put it that way! He leaves because of Victoria in a way, I can't give too much away!"
