A bid by Ukrainian spooks to kill off dozens of Russian air force pilots by poisoning them was thwarted at the last minute, it has been claimed.

A giant celebration cake and boxes of Jameson Irish Whiskey – both laced with a deadly poison – were reportedly delivered to a graduation anniversary celebration at a top military aviation academy. Pilots, including those still taking part in the ongoing war, were marking 20 years of passing out from Armavir Higher Military Aviation School.

But while the 20kg cake was cut, it was reportedly not eaten. The guests at the restaurant celebration included pilots from the Class of 2003 – with many of those now highly decorated and holding senior ranks. In all, 77 guests were at the event and the Fighterbomber Telegram channel reported “everyone is alive”.

The channel's operator added: “By pure chance and thanks to the conscientiousness of the officers, who put the anonymous cake and the booze aside, no-one had time to eat the cake or taste the booze. It would have been a disaster. 77 guests.

"But everybody is alive. GUR [Ukrainian military intelligence] failed, and it's good. The pilots sought to find out the identity of the apparently generous donor, and academy staff found a CCTV image of the man delivering it."

He was swiftly tracked by Russia ’s elaborate facial recognition databases as being from Melitopol in occupied Ukraine, according to the pro-war channel with 400,000 subscribers, which is run by a former military ace pilot and has close links to the air force.

He was also seen rushing from the academy to Stavropol airport, supposedly to fly to Moscow and flee Russia. The man – identified as 32-year-old E. Semenov – was detained and confessed to the poisoning bid, according to the channel. Reports did not say which poison was allegedly used.

A picture of the detained man was published by Baza media outlet. "He immediately told everything – about the cake with a potent poison, which bottles were poisoned right away, and which ones he bought to top the present up,” said Fighterbomber.

“He explained how he knew the number of guests, and where the celebration would take place. Even the aviation school emblem, drawn on top of the cake, was the current emblem.”

The man is suspected of ordering the cake from a local confectioner in Armavir, in Krasnodar region. Russian secret services are now “looking for confectioners and others involved in the failed sabotage”.

A number of pilots from the academy hold the Kremlin’s highest honour – Hero of Russia. There has been no official comment from Russian law enforcement on the alleged poisoning bid at one of the country’s most prestigious military aviation academies, founded by Stalin in 1940.

Fighterbomber warned pilots of the risk of assassination by Ukraine, saying: “Remember that there is a war going on. A graduate of an aviation school like yourself is… a good target. And also Ukrainians make media victories from these kinds of deaths. Keep in mind that you cannot only be poisoned. There are also a thousand other ways to kill. Be careful.”
