Ian Wright insists Cole Palmer's argument with Raheem Sterling over taking a penalty will stand Chelsea in good stead.

Palmer scored from the spot to put the Blues a goal up against Arsenal on Saturday, but he was forced to fight-off Sterling for the chance to take it. Sterling had also stepped up to take the penalty, which was awarded for a handball against William Saliba.

After a brief confrontation between the two team-mates, Enzo Fernandez stepped in to calm tensions and give the ball to Palmer. The summer signing duly buried his spot-kick sending Gunners keeper David Raya diving the wrong way.

But while some might feel the incident would show feelings of discontent are lurking in the Chelsea dressing room, Arsenal legend Wright believes it is actually a positive. He also praised Sterling for burying any feelings of anger and celebrating once Palmer scored.

"I like that from Palmer but I like the fact that the team came round to say, ‘let him do it’. Raheem took it, he went over to celebrate with him [Palmer]," Wright told Premier League Productions.

"The thing is, Raheem looked a little bit disappointed at first but then Fernandez came and said something, someone else came over and said something, and it’s done. They scored a penalty and everyone celebrated together. It’s not a bad thing."

Mykhaylo Mudryk would go on to double Chelsea's lead, but the Gunners ultimately had to settle for a point after late strikes from Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard. While happy to score, Palmer admitted his frustration after the game.

The Englishman posted a series of photos from the match on Instagram, with the caption: "Disappointed not to come away with three points against a very good side. Let’s keep pushing." Boss Mauricio Pochettino echoed those sentiments.

"Of course we are disappointed at the end, but we can’t only look at the last few minutes. There were many positive things. We were the better team. We lost two points in a way you never want to lose them," Pochettino said.

"But after playing a team that was fighting for the Premier League last season we can take many positives and be proud. We showed great character and personality. We were competitive, we deserved more.

"We need to keep believing because good things will arrive. I like the way the players are feeling now. They are really upset. I want to see that. But we need to keep working. We are in a good way.

"Broja wasn't available and to decide to play with Nico after the surgery on his wrist, it was to find a different way to play in our principles but I think to change the strategy to attack. It was a little bit both. I have been so happy with the performance of him and Palmer."
