Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has warned his team that they need to quickly adapt to the Premier League after a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Brentford.

The Clarets have struggled to find their feet on their return to the Premier League despite storming their way to the Championship title last season. Brentford, who hadn't won a home game all season, took control with goals from Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo.

Burnley's Connor Roberts was then sent off before Saman Ghoddos scored a long-range volley, capping a dominant display. "We've had injuries and it's been that type of start to the season for us," Kompany said after the game.

"It's for us to focus on the next game and make sure we absolutely take the learning from this." The defeat leaves Burnley inside the bottom three with just four points to show for their efforts after nine matches.

Kompany was pretty scathing in his analysis as he admitted: “Simple. Overall, not good enough. In the first half, losing 1-0 was flattering to us. In the second half, I thought we came out and looked like we should have done in the first half.

“We played really well for that spell, but moments we don’t take – and they did take – put the game past us. But you can’t have 45 minutes like that in the Premier League.”

Brentford's Neal Maupay, on loan from Everton, put in an impressive performance despite not scoring. Boss Thomas Frank praised his forwards, saying: "The front three looked very sharp and very good together. The second goal was also a fantastic goal, and then the third goal from Saman was goal of the day."

Frank also admitted his five-year anniversary celebration meal will taste a lot better after the victory. “It was very good performance, a completely well-deserved win,” he said.

“The first half was maybe our best performance this season. We should have probably been 3-0 up – that’s the only negative. That’s us at home, having attack after attack, high intensity. A very strong performance. In the second half, Burnley got a little bit into the game but 2-0 killed them off.”
