Seeing is believing - or so we've been told. But what you see and what you think you see are actually different things. Your senses gather information and send it to your brain, but your brain does not simply receive this information - it also creates your perception of the world.

That means that sometimes your brain fills in gaps when there is incomplete information, or can even create an image that isn't really there. Optical illusions are the perfect example. We live in a three-dimensional world, so your brain gets clues about depth, shading, lighting, and position to help you interpret what you see. But when you look at a two-dimensional image, your brain can be fooled because it doesn't get the same clues.

Optical illusions not only provide a fascinating insight into how our brain processes visual information. They are known to enhance cognitive abilities and stimulate the brain to think creatively and are also a fun way to challenge your mind and improve your problem-solving skills.

The latest illusion shared by Jagran Josh is certainly putting people to the test. The challenge is to spot the dog in the image in just five seconds - and with such a short time frame, it's seriously tricky. Look at the image below to see whether you can spot it.

Have you managed to find the dog yet? It's a lot more difficult than you'd imagine because of the black and white design and it can take your brain a while to adjust to what you're actually looking at.

Any luck? We think your five second time limit is probably up now, but if you're still looking, feel free to continue. The answer is coming right up though…

Did you manage to spot it successfully? It was quite a tricky one, wasn't it? If you managed to complete it, you're a real brain whizz. If you're still feeling as though you need some practice, see if you can spot the letter F in a sea of E's in just 18 seconds?

Did you know there are three kinds of optical illusions: literal, cognitive and physiological. The first kind, literal, compresses two images into one - you might see a bird, your partner an elephant. This is the most common type you're likely to come across.

Cognitive optical illusions are tricksters, going for your brain and what your eyes see at once, and they are often the most complicated: we will make a safe assumption about what we see, but the image will contradict it. Physiological illusions take advantage of how we take in light and colour, 2D images begin to move and create the appearance of depth by overstimulating the brain.
