Asda opening seven new convenience stores today across UK in huge expansion
Asda is opening seven brand new convenience stores today.
The supermarket chain's new sites will be under its Asda Express brand. These stores are smaller and will be located in old Co-op forecourts sites.
Asda took over a total of 132 Coop forecourts last year in a deal worth £438million as part of its plan to become the UK's second-largest supermarket chain and grow in the convenience store sector. Earlier this week Asda announced that 14 new Asda Express sites would open with the first seven opening their doors to the public on October 18.
Asda says the move will be beneficial for locals as each of its Express sites will stock around 3,000 branded and own-label products which it says will be 8.9% cheaper than prices at the previous Co-op store.
The new stores will also be taking on the staff who had worked at the previous Co-op site. Asda says over 2,000 former Co-Op staff will be taken on in the coming months.

Commenting on the new stores earlier this week, Andy Perry, managing director of convenience at Asda said “This conversion programme is an incredibly exciting moment for our business and accelerates our presence in the fast-growing convenience market."
Between now and next March, 116 former Co-op sites are set to be converted into Asda Express sites. Including the 14 openings this week around 25 Asda Express stores have now opened with 11 having opened last week. Around 100 more are planned to open across the first few months of 2024.
