A delivery driver has been caught red-handed indulging in a customer's meal.

The incident occurred at Mexihanas Hibachi Grill, a popular eatery in Long Beach, California, where the Grubhub delivery driver was caught on surveillance cameras ripping open a bag of food meant for a customer and devouring five dishes with his bare hands.

The restaurant's CEO, Martin Luzanilla, confronted the driver after seeing the video evidence. The driver initially claimed it was his own food, but upon closer inspection of the surveillance footage, it was evident that he had tampered with the packaging before indulging in the meal.

Luzanilla said: "I was pissed…I was upset. I went outside and confronted the gentleman, and he told me it was his food." He then contacted the customer to prevent them from consuming the contaminated food. He said of the bizarre incident: [The driver was eating] mouthfuls; whatever didn’t fit in his mouth was falling right back onto that plate. As soon as I saw [that], I rushed to the phone and called the customer."

Although the customer had already received the tampered order, the restaurant promptly prepared a fresh one and personally delivered it to the customer to rectify the situation. According to Luzanilla, nearly 40% of his orders come from delivery apps. "More than anything, it’s the bad review," Luzanilla said. "When we get a bad review because someone didn’t receive something, how’s that going to look?"

And he said of the delivery drivers: "If you’re any delivery service driver and you come into my restaurant to deliver some food and you’re hungry, I got you. Seriously, you don’t need to pick into the food…I’ll get you a bowl so that way you can eat."

Grubhub, in response to the incident, released a statement expressing their zero-tolerance policy for misconduct on their platform. The company said it suspended the driver immediately and reached out to the affected customer to address the situation and resolve the issue.

The statement read: "We have no tolerance for misconduct on our platform. The vast majority of our orders are completed without incident or complaint, and when things don’t go as planned, we work hard to make things right. Upon hearing of this situation, we took immediate action and suspended the driver from our platform. We’ve also reached out to the diner to address and help resolve the situation."
