Big Brother legend takes aim at reboot as viewers slam 'pathetic' housemates

Big Brother 2023 viewers and a former show favourite have blasted the show as 'pathetic' after housemates grew teary-eyed during a segment on Sunday's episode.

Fans of the ITV2 series took to Twitter last night to vent at the emotional scenes, which saw contestants reflecting on their relationships with their loved ones just one week into the competition. The 15 remaining housemates received photos of friends and family members, and things quickly got heavy as the group opened up about their lives back home.

Gathered on the sofas in the sitting room, the contestants described their picture to their Big Brother castmates and explained the significance of the people in the shot. It didn't take long for folks to grow emotional, with some even choking up in tears during the segment.

Hallie, 18, spoke candidly about how her mother had supported her throughout her journey as a transgender woman. "I thought I'd got myself together so I could say a few more things," she told the housemates. "My mum has spent so much of her life putting her time and effort into other people and making sure that I am happy and comfortable with myself," she said, before revealing that her mother had put herself in debt to ensure Hallie could access hormonal treatment.

At another point of the activity, Noky, 26, wept lightly as she shared a photo of her representing Great Britain at the Miss Universe competition and hailed her family for helping her to be the "best version of myself." The emotional scenes have received quite the backlash online, however, with many viewers rolling their eyes at the contestants missing their families so soon into the show.

"These housemates crying as if they’ve been away in Afghanistan for the past 2 years," one unimpressed viewer tweeted, while another said, "Why are these housemates crying as if they’ve been away at war for 3 years?" "Its not even been a week, why are we getting emotional family moments? We need drama and threats of being thrown out!" a third frustrated person wrote.

Others blamed the producers of the show for focusing on depth rather than drama, with one viewer writing: "Big brother producers need to up the game a little here, as a fan from the start I want to see confrontation not people crying because they have been away from family for 1 week!"

Glyn Wise, who finished as runner-up on the seventh series of Big Brother in 2006, was also quick to call out the show for the mushy segment. "Is this a joke #bbuk People getting emotional about seeing pictures of their family members after a week of being in the house? I stayed there for 3 months with no contact from the outside world. I think we were tougher housemates back then!" he tweeted.

The 35-year-old's hot take was met by a flurry of responses, most of which aligned with his no-nonsense standpoint. "It's really pathetic," one person agreed, while another said, "This show started well but they have run out of ideas so quickly, dullllllllll!"
