With the bedbug outbreak in Paris seemingly now reaching London, thousands fear the pesky insects could eventually find their way inside our homes.

Bedbugs have been reportedly spotted on public transport in London and Manchester, with one woman claiming that one of the pests was crawling up her leg on the London underground.

A recent TikTok video of an insect crawling over her leg on the Tube has prompted people to urge Transport for London (TfL) to "sort it out". The eight-second-long clip shows what appears to be the insect over the woman's black trousers. TfL said it was not aware of any bedbug outbreak in London, but it will continue to monitor the situation.

While Bedbugs are not considered to be dangerous, as they do not transmit diseases, a bite can lead to serious allergic reactions among some people and they can make life pretty upsetting if you get an infestation. The pesky insects can also live for as long as a year in households before dying and it's an unfortunate truth that there's no quick fix if you have an infestation at home.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends a combination of both chemical and non-chemical removal approaches. They say: "Treating bed bugs is complex and can take weeks to months, depending on the extent of the infestation. Your likelihood of success depends on many factors, including how many bed bugs you have, how much clutter is available for hiding places, whether your neighbors have bedbugs, and whether all residents of a house or building will participate. To be successful, everyone in the home will need to cooperate and do their part."

As part of this, you will end up doing a lot of vacuuming at home, as well as numerous other steps such as sealing entry points, getting rid of infested items, and hiring a professional pest company. While vacuuming doesn't remove the bedbugs completely, it does help to reduce their numbers. What you need to do is run the vacuum over any possible hiding places, such as your bed, dresser, and carpet, as well as other soft furnishings.

However, when doing this there's one crucial mistake to ensure you avoid. Which is keeping the vacuum bag for too long afterward. If you don't dispose of your vacuum bag straight away, the bugs can easily escape and infest your home or someone else's living space, according to the EPA.

The experts have also been advised that people should check the labels before using pesticides. While chemical products tend to effectively kill insects, some products can cause harm to yourself, and others in your household, including pets. Some products have also been proven to be unhelpful in killing bedbugs, so if you're unsure, it's best to always seek expert advice.
