Jamie Carragher has told Kalvin Phillips he needs to start "treating training like a game every day" if he wants to succeed at Manchester City.

Phillips made a £50million move to City from boyhood club Leeds last summer, but made just five appearances in all competitions. Despite talk of a move away from the Etihad this summer, he vowed to fight for his place instead.

After Rodri was given a three-match ban for getting sent off against Nottingham Forest, Phillips said he was ready for "the biggest week" in his City career. However, he only started one of those games, City's 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle, and was an unused substitute in the loss against Arsenal on Sunday with teenager Rico Lewis preferred.

With Rodri now set to return after the international break, fresh doubts have been raised over Phillips' future with reports claiming a January move is on the cards. And Carragher has offered some advice to the England international, reflecting on the way he would react when Liverpool would sign a new player he felt was competing for his spot.

"If I was in a position where the manager wasn't playing me, I'd be treating training like a game every day," Carragher told the Stick to Football podcast. "We all give 100% in training, but we all have times in our careers where you feel like you've got something to show the manager, or a new player coming in.

"I was like that a lot when I trained. I had every season at Liverpool where it felt like I was getting replaced by a new player coming in, in my position and I would be like a lunatic everyday thinking I have to be better than him in training and I'm not saying he's not.

"I don't know Kalvin Phillips at all, but the point is, make sure you're noticed every day in training, whether that's your voice, you're loud, you're leaving a tackle in on someone, you're going to the manager and saying 'okay, I don't understand my position, explain it to me'."

Carragher also suggested some players do not have the "personality to actually impose themselves" when they join a big club, but admitted he "might be being a bit harsh" on Phillips.

"I remember Jose Mourinho saying something about young players getting a chance and I always say that about big clubs, and young players coming through, you can't expect a manager to give you a run of five or six games," he added.

"You might get one or two and you have to show the manager that he can trust you. Young players get a chance in training, and it might be being a bit harsh on Kalvin Phillips as I've never moved clubs.

"I've never gone into a new dressing room, but you have to grab it by the scruff of the neck and I've seen it too often when new players have come into Liverpool, where they've got the talent but not the personality to actually impose themselves."
