King Charles is appalled by and condemns the barbaric acts of terrorism in Israel, a Buckingham Palace spokesman has said.

The monarch is "extremely concerned" about the on-going conflict with 17 British nationals, including children, said to be dead or missing after the Palestinian militant group Hamas' attack on Israel. The death toll has reached 1,200, with around 900 people killed by Israeli air strikes on Gaza.

The King, the latest world figures to condemn the actions of Hamas, has requested to be kept informed as the crisis worsens. A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “This is a situation His Majesty is extremely concerned about, and he has asked to be kept actively updated.

The war, which has claimed at least 2,100 lives on both sides since it begun, is expected to escalate amid new exchanges of fire over Israeli's northern borders with militants in Lebanon and Syria. Hospitals have now been described as 'public cemeteries' in Gaza.

More than two million people in Gaza have no electricity whatsoever after the sole plant in the strip ran out of fuel and ceased operations. The power plant ran out of fuel, forcing it to shut down after Israel cut off supplies, the Energy Ministry said at lunchtime on Wednesday.

There is now no electricity in Gaza other than private generators that some people may have. The blackouts come as Israel has decided to block fuel shipments into the Gaza Strip as part of what the Israeli government has called a "complete siege" on the territory run by the Hamas militant group.

Middle East Eye's Gaza-based correspondent, Maha Hussaini, said that she lost connection due to being unable to charge her laptop and phone. The journalist raised concerns that people in Gaza have been "silenced" as a result of the power cuts Israeli airstrikes have left entire neighbourhoods demolished and hospitals in the Gaza Strip are struggling to treat the injured.
