Brits heading on holidays being warned to 'never' put their suitcases on a hotel bed when checking into a room for the first time.

When it comes to hotels, there are plenty of travel tips and secrets shared by hotel workers to help you get the most out of your stay, even if some can be divisive. However, one thing that we can all agree on is that you'll want to avoid any room that has bed bugs.

After all, France has been hit with an invasion of the gross pests, prompting warnings for travellers to check their rooms before settling in. However, one expert has revealed that there's a simple mistake that most people make - which is to put their suitcase on the bed to start unpacking.

Martin Seeley, the CEO at MattressNextDay has revealed that if you put your bags on the bed before checking for bugs, they could very quickly get into your stuff before you've even finished unpacking - and then have a "free ticket home" with you after the trip.

He warned: "NEVER put your suitcase on the hotel bed. It is common that when you initially arrive at your hotel, you might put your suitcase straight onto the bed without checking for bugs and begin unpacking. However, by doing this, you’re putting your luggage and clothes right onto the place bed bugs are commonly found and giving them a free ticket home. If you can, store your suitcase as close to the room door as possible."

According to Martin, there are a few tell-tale signs if the critters have made it into your room. He explained: "In order to discover if the hotel bed is infested, first start by pulling the bedding off to reveal the bare mattress. Adult bed bugs have flat bodies and are a similar size and colour to an apple pip, depending on their age.

"When checking the mattress, look out for red, rust, or dark-coloured stains, and eggs or eggshells that are about 1mm in size. These are hard to spot, but they do tend to come in clusters making them easier to see. Make sure to also check the underside, any bed drawers, and between the gap of the headboard and the wall itself."

It's not the first time that Brits have been advised to check their room before unpacking.

One hotel worker previously said she always "turns off the lights" when she first enters a new hotel room.

Halee, who has 15 years of experience in the hotel sector, posted on TikTok to warn holidaymakers to make some thorough checks for the critters. "Turn off lights, close any shades, and use the flashlight on your phone," she suggested. She recommended checking under the bed, and the corners and creases of bedding. She added: "The reason you should check your bed with the lights off is because bed bugs are actually nocturnal so they're more likely to be out and about looking for their prey."
