Richard Madeley told Good Morning Britain on Wednesday that Holly Willoughby "will be back" on TV after her This Morning exit, while he added she wouldn't likely return to the show she has hosted for 14 years.

The former This Morning host backed Holly's "wise" and "courageous" decision to quit the ITV daytime series, as she announced the news on Tuesday evening. She had temporarily stepped back from the daytime series last week, when the police uncovered a 'kidnap' and 'murder' plot against her.

But she has since confirmed she won't be returning to the show, while it's hoped she will continue other TV commitments including Dancing on Ice– but she has not appeared to address this just yet. ITV colleague Richard praised "brave" Holly as he spoke to GMB about her "wise" decision on Wednesday.

Richard, who previously hosted the show with his wife Judy Finnigan until 2001, said that while she wouldn't be returning to This Morning, Holly "would be back" but that she was "taking stock" and putting her family first. Speaking to hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls, Richard said it was "the right thing" for Holly to do.

He said: "I think Judy agrees with me that Holly has done a very brave, wise and courageous thing. We know here in the building cos the This Morning studio is just a few yards away, we know Holly genuinely puts her family first. It's her family first and her career second, people watching don't know that, they just see Holly the professional, but she does put them first.

"I think given the year she's had and all the things she's had to put up with, the terrible thing that happened last week which I know we can't talk about as it's under law, given she’s done the show for 14 years which is a year longer than Judy and I did it when we were there, I think it’s given her a chance to step back and take stock, and she’s put her family first. She’s gonna focus on them for a while."

He added: "She'll come back, not to This Morning, but she'll come back to something else on telly. But I think she’s done exactly the right thing, if not for her own mental health."

In a statement shared on Instagram, Holly wrote on Tuesday: "I have let ITV know today that after 14 years, I will not be returning to This Morning.

"To everyone who has ever worked on the show over the years, thank you so so much. This such a difficult goodbye, you are incredible and I forever will be proud of what we've done together. Thank you to everyone at ITV for being supportive. To every guest who has sat on our sofa, thank you. Most of all, thank you to the wonderful viewers. You've been loyal, so supportive and the very best company every day.

"Richard and Judy said, 'We only look after this show, it will always belong to the viewers.' It's been an honour to just be part of it's story and I know this story has many chapters left to go. Sadly, however, I now feel I have to make this decision for me and my family. I will miss you all so much. Holly."
