The neighbour of a man accused of stabbing four University of Idaho students to death has revealed he was a "very late night person" who "never slept".

Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning at his parents' home in Monroe County, Pennsylvania where he was spending the Christmas holidays.

He has been charged with four counts of first degree murder and felony burglary.

This is the first arrest in connection to the brutal slaying of Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20 and Ethan Chapin, 20, whose bodies were found in an off-campus student house on November 13 in Moscow, Idaho, US.

The small town is home to University of Idaho, where the four studied. The killings shocked the community and the wider country, even getting international attention due to its brutality.

A neighbour of the accused murderer has opened up about how Kohberger usually kept to himself but was active during the early hours of most days.

The neighbour, who wanted to remain anonymous, told New York Post: "He’s normally a very late night person, going to the bathroom and vacuuming at 1 or 12 in the morning.

"I have kids, so sometimes I thought of speaking to him or complaining, but never did.

"It seemed like he never slept because he was always doing something all night."

The woman, who lived in the apartment below Kohberger with her husband, admitted both were stunned when the criminology student from Washington State University Pullman was named as a suspect. Pullman is just a 15-minute drive from the home where the four students were stabbed multiple times.

She added: "I don’t know how he could’ve killed people because he doesn’t look that tough. We are all PhD students here so it takes a lot of hard work and smarts to get to this point. You don’t think someone like that could do something like this."

The student housing is usually reserved for pHD students with families but Kohberger moved into the accommodation in August on his own.

She concluded: "At first he moved in by himself and we thought his family would come later, but he lived there alone."

Kohberger's family released a statement on Sunday through public defender Jason LaBar they are stadning by their son in an effort to "promote his presumption of innocence".
