Woman's relationship in tatters after refusing to collect step-child from date
Being a step-mum is no easy task to take on. Granted some relationships can come easily but others can take a while for trust to build and blossom. One mum-to-be has revealed how her carefully forged friendship with her step-daughter has been left in tatters after she refused to collect her from a date.
Taking to social media to ask for advice and clarification on whether or not she is in the wrong, she wrote: “My husband has a 15-year-old daughter, Mia, from a previous relationship. She lives with us part-time and has recently started dating around. We haven’t always gotten along the best, but I love her like my own regardless.
“This past weekend, Mia was going on a movie date with a new boy that she said would end at around 9pm. My husband was at work at the time. He’s a first responder and his hours/flexibility are a bit uncertain, however, he was aware of the date and was pretty sure that he would be able to pick her up, so that was the plan. I’m currently in my third trimester of a rough pregnancy and placed on bed rest by my doctor, I would not be able to pick her up.”
During the evening, Mia called her step-mum to ask if her dad could come and pick her up as she was feeling uncomfortable on the date. The woman explained the situation, telling her that she was on bed rest and couldn’t drive, her dad was still at work and couldn’t leave yet. However, she organised with a neighbour to go and collect her straightaway as she didn’t want her to have to stay with her date.

Despite everything working out, the woman’s husband and Mia were both left unhappy with how she had handled the situation. She went on: “They seem to think I have some resentment because she is my stepdaughter, which is not the case at all. They said that I should have acted more urgently because we don’t know this boy very well and he could have hurt her. They think that I should have just violated my bed rest order and went because it’s a short drive and doesn’t require much movement. I feel like I did my best considering my physical limitations.”
After reading the post, most people were on the woman’s side and rushed to assure her she was not in the wrong. One person wrote: “Not the a**hole! You are medically unable to drive but still arranged a way home for her. The fact that they wanted you to put yourself (and baby!) in danger instead is a pretty big red flag.”
Another person added: “Nobody sucks except your husband. If I squint I can see Mia’s position. You did your best and she got home safe and she can feel how she feels. Your husband should have your back and take the bulk of your daughter’s wrath.”
And someone else wrote: “Husband shouldn’t be allowing his 15-year-old daughter to go on a date, while he was unavailable in case of emergencies and you were on bed rest. He should be ready to pick her up or ask her to postpone her date to a time when he would be available if needed. This is very irresponsible of him.”
