Love Island winner Sammy Root opens up about single life after unexpected split

Love Island Winner Sammy Root made his Pride of Britain debut last night and sported a deep red suit for the occasion.

The 22-year-old from Kent won this year's series with Jess Harding, also 22, however, but the pair have since split ways in a shock breakup shortly after leaving the villa.

Walking down the red carpet separately, Sammy revealed how life since leaving the villa has been a "whirlwind" but he is now adapting to life since leaving the show.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror on the red carpet, Sammy said: "Overall it's been amazing, Love Island was one of the best things I've done in my life. I'm happy, everything is going really well and I'm having a lot of fun."

Opening up about single life outside the villa, he added: "It's weird and a whole different reality but I'm adapting well. I thought it was going to be harder, but it's been a nice transition and everyone has been really friendly. I was so excited to get into the villa and the first day walking in was a shock but it was amazing."

The couple were named the winners of the ITV dating series in July 2023, but announced their shock split in an emotional Instagram post last week. Sammy revealed the pair had split after just three months together despite being voted the most compatible of all the pairings on the show. The reality TV star claimed he was blindsided by the separation.

In his Instagram video, he said: "I thought I would come online to address today's news about me and Jess. Yes, we had a private conversation regarding our relationship but this was left up in the air as Jess is still away and we haven't had a chance to speak in person. To be totally clear – I at least wanted a face-to-face conversation to see if our relationship could be saved and felt this would be the respectful way forward."

He felt honoured to be attending the star-studded event on Sunday celebrating the stories of the Pride Of Britain winners, as he shared: "It's such a privilege to be here among all of these amazing people."

The Daily Mirror Pride Of Britain Awards With TSB was hosted by Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo, and the two stars shared their excitement at teaming up once again for the 24th annual event.

Watch The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards with TSB on Thursday at 8pm on ITV1.
