Prince Harry is being 'punished' after King Charles offered him an olive branch - but he "snapped it in half", a royal expert has claimed. It is believed that Harry's relationship with his father and older brother Prince William remains "firmly rooted at rock bottom" and reconciliation is a "long way off".

In fact, last month when Harry came to the UK for an awards ceremony, he failed to meet up with his father. Sources previously said the King and Queen Camilla were left 'furious' and 'wearied' by the claims Harry made in his bombshell book, Spare. This is despite the King directly expressing his love for his youngest son in his first address as monarch.

And royal expert and author Duncan Larcombe told The Sun: "Harry has said some deeply hurtful things about Camilla, and yet the King will still correspond with his son, albeit not directly. It's remarkable really, because when Charles became King he said he loved Harry and Meghan which was a huge olive branch - which Harry then took, snapped in half and then hit him with it."

However, the royal author added that despite the King being willing to communicate, he is still "subtly punishing" Harry in his approach on how his son can contact him. Duncan added: "It appears that King Charles’ approach towards Harry now is business as usual - 'if you want to see me you need to make an appointment'. Harry will have to get past the grey suits and jump through hoops to talk to his father. It's very standoffish but I think that's a way that the king is subtly punishing his son."

It comes after a pal of the King claimed him healing his rift with estranged son is not his top priority. Some believe Charles should take the lead and bury the hatchet with Harry, but the friend explained there is no rush to do so.

They told the Daily Beast: "The Harry issue doesn’t have to be sorted out immediately but it will be sorted out eventually. Charles loves Harry but his priority is to fulfil his duty as king and not let his mother down. That means constitutional considerations have to come first."

However, a former member of staff for the King told the publication it is "not sustainable" for the current situation between father and son to continue. They said: "It's not sustainable for the king, who is the national symbol of unity, to be on such bad terms with his son that they haven’t been pictured together in years. Ultimately Charles has not just a personal but also a strategic need to resolve the issue."

Meanwhile, it's unclear how many potential meet-up opportunities between Harry and Charles will present themselves in the future. That's because Harry and Meghan are divided on how much they want to return to the UK for visits, according to an insider.
