Company boss stamped on frail customer with steel toe-capped boots in money row
A skip company boss stamped on a frail customer with his steel toe-capped boots in a row over money before taunting him as he lay injured by dumping a load of soil on his drive.
Daniel Jenkins attack had a devastating impact on the victim, he was left feeling he has "no future" to live for and even gave up his business of restoring and selling classic Minis. Cardiff Crown Court heard the background to the assault was building work the victim was having done at his property in Pontllanfraith near Blackwood.
Skips for the work were provided by Jenkins' company Digaway. In August, 2021, Jenkins went to the victim's house asking for payment only to be told the builder on the project had been paid upfront for the work and the money would have to come from him. The court heard that on August 18 Jenkins returned to the property in a skip lorry, reversed onto the driveway, and began dumping a load of soil.
When the victim, who is in poor health with a serious liver condition, saw what was happening he climbed into the cab of the vehicle to try to stop the unloading. The defendant grabbed the man and both fell to the floor - Jenkins then stamped on the victim a number of times with his steel toe-capped work boots.
As the injured man lay on the floor 42-year-old Jenkins proceeded to dump the load of soil he had brought. The victim suffered a fractured shoulder and fractured ribs in the assault. The court heard details of reports that outlined the deterioration in the victim's physical and mental health in the months after the assault, including an exacerbation of his existing serious liver condition.

In an impact statement that was read to the court the victim said that, as a result of the attack, he had been forced to give up restoring and selling classic Mini cars, something that had been his hobby, his social life, and his business. He said he was now on strong pain medication, needed sleeping tablets, struggled to leave the house, and was fearful that every knock on the door might be the assailant returning. He added: "What is the point in carrying on? I have no future."
Jenkins from Blackwood, Caerphilly County, had previously been convicted at trial of inflicting grievous bodily harm and criminal damage when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has previous convictions for battery and a public order matter.
Counsel for the defendant said Jenkins was a hard worker who had taken over his father's business, and he said Jenkins had not gone to the property in question with any expectation of, or intention to use, violence. Judge Robin Rouch said Jenkins had gone to his victim's house to "bully" him before stamping on him with his steel toe-capped boots and then "taunting" him by dumping a load of soil on the drive as the injured man lay on the ground.
He accepted the defendant had shown "some remorse" but he said a sentence of immediate custody was the only appropriate one.
Jenkins was sentenced to 26 month in prison. He will serve up to half that period in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community.
