Most couples and families have had at least one row over how to load the dishwasher, with most people believing there is a “right” way to stack it. Lots of appliances have specific spaces for glasses, plates, and cutlery but what about pots, pans, and mugs?

If you’ve been pondering this question and want to settle any family rows, the experts have you covered. Professional home organiser, Sue Spencer, has revealed exactly how to properly stack a dishwasher once and for all to avoid anything coming out looking like it has hardly been cleaned.

Speaking on behalf of Hisence, makers of award-winning consumer electronics, Sue says: “There’s a science to properly stacking a dishwasher and with a few simple steps, you can master the art of loading a dishwasher and say goodbye to those frustrating dishwashing mishaps. Getting on top of the correct stacking method helps you get the most out of your appliance and reduce unnecessary cycles with empty spaces that could be filled.”

Sharing her expert tips, Sue advises that items need to be stacked with enough space around them to actually allow the water to move around and get rinsed off. Stacking in as much as you can will lead to residue and dirty plates.

Load 1: Wash saucepans and roasting tins first

“Saucepans, roasting tins, and cooking utensils should be loaded into the dishwasher on a hot programme. Breakfast dishes and chopping boards can likely fit in too, and cookware should be placed around the sides and back of the lower rack, at an angle that will allow the water and detergent to flow freely,” says Sue.

Load 2: Tableware

“Use the top rack for glasses, cups, gravy jugs, small bowls, and serving spoons, arrange plates and bowls on the bottom rack – making sure you leave enough gaps between them,” advises Sue. “If crockery is arranged too closely, this will restrict water flow and risk the clean result. Finally, place your large serving bowls and platters along the sides and back of the lower rack and tilt them towards the centre of the dishwasher.”
