Fans are in stitches after Arsenal and Australia defender Steph Catley was interviewed as a ‘St Albans local’ in a segment on Lorraine, with the interviewer seemingly having no idea of the identity of the World Cup star.

Recognising a famous face can be difficult, especially when that famous face is pattering about a local coffee shop in Hertfordshire and not wearing her distinguishable Arsenal or Australia strip.

Such was the circumstance of Catley, dressed in an oversized black t-shirt with black sunglasses and a navy jumper tossed over her shoulders, when she was stopped by a reporter on the Lorraine show to ask what she would do if she won £100,000 as part of a jackpot prize promoted by the show.

“I just got engaged recently,” the defender said meekishly. “So I’d probably save it up for the wedding for sure, because that is a lot more expensive than I thought.”

The segment swiftly moves on to another part of the show, and eagle-eyed viewers were quick to point out the apparent and humorous overlook by the popular television show.

Catley became a household name in the summer when she scored the game-winning penalty for the Matildas in their opening Women’s World Cup match against Ireland in front of a record crowd of 75,000 people, before rescuing her nation once more in a do-or-die final group stage clash against Canada.

Catley, wearing the captain’s armband in place of the injured Sam Kerr, eventually went on to inspire the home nation to an historic semi-final berth against England, where they fell to an agonising 3-1 defeat.

The 29-year-old has also inspired her fair share of memorable moments for Gunners faithful since joining Arsenal in 2020, racking up just under 50 appearances.

But in front of George Street canteen, Catley was just another St Albans local queried on what she might get up to if she won it big. And fans were reduced to hysterics at the video, widely circulated online.

Football commentator Jacqui Oatley pointed out its uncanny similarity to a news bulletin some years ago that had “Emma Hayes - new mum” as the caption on an interview clip from a hospital, seemingly leaving out her more memorable and notable accomplishment of having just lifted the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium with Chelsea.
