CCTV captured the shocking moment a teenage driver on the wrong side of the road smashed into a bus stop - missing a pedestrian by inches.

Reckless Ismail Adan clipped a traffic island on a busy street in Cardiff which thrust the vehicle into a post box and the bus shelter, forcing the pedestrian to dive for cover. The 19-year-old appeared to be speeding along the wrong side of the road when he struck the island at around 9.30pm on March 30, narrowly missing the pedestrian.

Appearing at Cardiff crown court, Adan was dressed down by a judge who said he "lacked maturity", but ultimately avoided jail over the crash, Wales Online reports. The court heard he had been with a passenger in the front seat at the time and was "speeding on the wrong side of the road" before swerving to dodge another car approaching him head-on.

Footage shown in court showed the moment Adan lost control of the Vauxhall Mokka, crashing first into a post box and then a bus stop. A pedestrian could be seen running out of the direction of the car and a nearby phone box was narrowly avoided. The police attended the scene and were approached by the defendant who introduced himself and claimed another car had pulled out of nowhere and caused him to swerve.

Adan, of Penarth Road, Grangetown, later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving with no insurance. The court heard he had no previous convictions. Recorder Christian Jowett said the defendant had lacked maturity in this matter due to his young age. He sentenced Adan to 12 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months. He was ordered to carry out a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement, 200 hours of unpaid work, must pay costs of £420, and was disqualified from driving.
