Martin Odegaard refused to get carried away after learning of Manchester City 's early stumble in the title race on Saturday afternoon.

The Arsenal captain, 24, played an influential role in the 4-0 win over Bournemouth on the south coast, bagging a goal and a late assist as the Gunners ruthlessly put their opponents to the sword. At the same time, the Premier League champions came undone against Wolves, who recorded a famous victory at Molineux.

After running City close in the title race last term, Odegaard and Arsenal have designs on going one better this year. And while Odegaard couldn't suppress a wry smile when he was informed of Manchester City's defeat at the weekend, he stressed the need for Arsenal to stay focused on their own results.

When he was asked for his verdict on the City result following Arsenal's win, Odegaard said: “I just heard. But again, we have to focus on ourselves. This league is so tough you say that everyone can beat everyone and you have to be sharp, ready for every game and it is such a busy schedule now. So we have to focus on ourselves. Make sure we are ready for next week.”

Arsenal and Manchester City meet in a seismic showdown at the Emirates on Sunday in a match that is likely to have major repercussions in the title race. For now, though, Odegaard is more concerned with their Champions League date with RC Lens in midweek.

He added: “I think every game is a big game. So, first we are in the Champions League and we have to be ready for that one and then we'll see after that but every game for us it's a big game.”

Odegaard earned plenty of plaudits on social media for his role in Kai Havertz ' first Arsenal goal at the weekend. The Gunners captain could be seen speaking to Gabriel Jesus shortly before Havertz was presented with the opportunity to break his Gunners duck via the penalty spot.

And Mikel Arteta was full of praise for his team for the manner in which they rallied round their teammate, who had been chastised for making a slow start at the Emirates following his summer switch from Chelsea.

Arteta said of that moment after the match: "I’m really happy for the win, but I’m even happier to be part of a team that shows the human qualities that they do today. To show that empathy to a player that has some question marks they warmed me even more today. I’m so happy with our supporters the way they made him feel.

"If there’s a player who deserves that it’s him. Probably it will change everything. If he had any question marks about how we feel about him they are out."
