Cleaning the toilet has never been considered an enjoyable activity, but the unpleasant chore is essential for keeping limescale at bay. Around 60 percent of the UK has hard or very hard water, meaning the chalky substance is often a nightmare for many households.

Over time, the deposits can appear as brown and discoloured stains which are commonly found in showers, kettles and in the toilet. That was the unfortunate case for one irritated homeowner, who took to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page to seek desperate advice for the unsightly stains.

Posting to fellow group members, an anonymous user shared: "Have these brown stains all around the rim of the toiler and I can’t seem to get rid of them. I recently moved to the house and it was worse than before and it’s driving me mad. I’ve heard it’s because of the hard water here. Can anyone suggest anything that’ll help to remove it?"

Limescale can be difficult to remove and can significantly spoil the pristine bathroom appearance. Responding to the post, one compassionate member penned: "Harpic black will do the trick, I won’t use anything else on my toilets now. Leave it for an hour and your toilet will be sparkling."

Others echoed this advice, as Dawn Evened commented: "Use black Harpic bleach, it’s amazing, no scrubbing required," while Sammie Prescott shared: "Black Hapric down your toilet overnight, you can also buy the tablets which are great too." Harpic Power Plus Toilet Cleaner has received more than 1,100 global ratings on Amazon, with 80 percent awarding the product five stars. It can be purchased for many retailers, including supermarkets for around £1.

The product description reads: "Did you know that bleach disinfects but leaves limescale, home to germs, behind? Harpic Power Plus with its unique formula removes tough limescale and gets rid of germs, even the ones you cannot see." Other helpful group members suggested banishing the stubborn stains with Coke since the acid in the fizzy drink reacts with the limescale and helps to dissolve it.
