Bake Off contestant breaks down as first axing dubbed 'a scandal' by viewers

The Great British Bake Off's first contestant to be cooked broke down as fans labelled his departure a 'scandal'.

Amos, the 43-year-old deli manager from North London, left the show on the first episode after his Show Stopper fell flat. The judges said his cake was just too "dense" as he was sent packing but after getting high praise earlier in the show, some fans were left stumped.

The hopeful couldn't hold back the tears after being the first to be booted off. as Noel Fielding said his name, he said "it's fine" before later adding: "It was obviously the Show Stopper, it stopped my show...." he broke off as her started to cry.

As he wiped away the tears, he rediscovered his composure to say: "It's been amazing, just to walk into that tent. It's softening the blow a little bit." But the decision wasn't greeted with approval on social media and viewers rushed to twitter to protest.

One fumed: "Absolute scandal on the bake off, not Amos. #GBBO" and a second wasn't happy either, writing: "Not sure how Amos got sent home when he came second in technical, and people who came bottom didn’t do great in the showstopper either #GBBO."

Another said: "Amos? Really? 2nd in Technical??!! Bad choice lads #GBBO and a fourth viewer grumbled: "I know his showstopper was pretty horrifc, but Amos got 2nd in the technical and his first bake wasn’t utterly horrific - thought Dana was consistently worse, Nicky not much better #GBBO."

One thing most did agree on was the new arrivals. Fans clearly loved Alison's first day as they raced to twitter to give their views on her opening night. "Alison Hammond was born for this #GBBO" one impressed viewer wrote. A second said: "Well, I can safely say that Alison Hammond is a far superior co-host than Matt Lucas - she’s actually entertaining #GBBO #GBBO2023 #bakeoff"

Another put: "Alison Hammond the queen of TV" with more kind comments coming her way as one impressed viewer said: "@AlisonHammond absolutely killing it on GBBO. Hats off!" A fifth tweeted: "She’s amazing. It’s about damn time that we had more Alison on telly."

The This Morning fan-favourite is the latest recruit of the Channel 4 programme joining as a host alongside Noel Fielding after Matt Lucas said his goodbyes.

It not been a cake walk for Alison, mind you. Despite having a ball during filming, shesays she got a little too taste-happy in the early weeks of the competition. Judge Paul Hollywood, who has been with the show since it started on the BBC told Alison that was a 'huge mistake.'

"You did make a mistake in the first week," he told Alison during a joint interview in Bella Magazine. "Where you went round and ate everything. You said 'I'm never doing that again!" Alison joked she had 'eaten everything' the amateur bakers had made. After indulging in the array of sweet treats on display in the famous tent she said: "I've put on a stone! This series, I've put on a stone!"

Bake Off's official Twitter account also paid tribute to Matt. They quoted Matt's goodbye message and wrote alongside it: "We've loved having Matt Lucas brighten up our Tent for the last three years, especially when laughter and smiles were so much in need. We appreciate everything he's done for Bake Off, from working in Covid bubbles to supporting the bakers. It's been a pleasure - thanks Matt."
