Bake Off fans can't wait to tuck into the new series tonight but some will no doubt be cheese-caked off that Matt Lucas won't be on our screens.

The Little Britain legend confirmed he was leaving late last year and said it has become "clear" he can't continue hosting the show. During his time on the programme, he filmed a total of 51 episodes and was always there for the stressed baker who needed his support when their dessert, cake or tart went wrong.

But he won't be there as the iconic programme returns tonight as Alison Hammond makes her Bake Off bow. The This Morning fan-favourite is the latest recruit of the Channel 4 programme joining as a host alongside Noel Fielding after Matt said his goodbyes.

The funnyman explained all on twitter, telling fans: "Farewell Bake Off! It's been a delicious experience and I can't imagine a more fun way of spending my summers. But it's become clear to me that I can't present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects.

He added: "I would like to give my warmest thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the crew and, of course, the wonderful bakers for welcoming me into the tent. So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else. "I wish whoever takes over the very best and I can't wait to tune into the next series without already knowing who won!"

It not been a cake walk for Alison, mind you. Despite having a ball during filming, shesays she got a little too taste-happy in the early weeks of the competition. Judge Paul Hollywood, who has been with the show since it started on the BBC told Alison that was a 'huge mistake.'

"You did make a mistake in the first week," he told Alison during a joint interview in Bella Magazine. "Where you went round and ate everything. You said 'I'm never doing that again!" Alison joked she had 'eaten everything' the amateur bakers had made. After indulging in the array of sweet treats on display in the famous tent she said: "I've put on a stone! This series, I've put on a stone!"

Bake Off's official Twitter account also paid tribute to Matt. They quoted Matt's goodbye message and wrote alongside it: "We've loved having Matt Lucas brighten up our Tent for the last three years, especially when laughter and smiles were so much in need. We appreciate everything he's done for Bake Off, from working in Covid bubbles to supporting the bakers. It's been a pleasure - thanks Matt."
