New York Jets running back Michael Carter had to be held back by his teammates after confronting his position coach, Taylor Embree, on the sidelines during Sunday's 15-10 loss to the New England Patriots.

Carter, 24, had just failed to block blitzing Patriots safety Kyle Dugger during the third quarter before giving Embree a piece of his mind on the sidelines. The third-year pro began yelling in Embree's face before the running backs coach walked away instead of causing a scene.

After trying to follow him and continue the tirade, Jets wide receiver Xavier Gipson blocked Carter's path, and cornerback Justin Hardee also de-escalated the situation. With distance now between the player and coach, Embree belatedly responded while looking visibly frustrated.

It was not even the first flashpoint during the game. Minutes earlier, receiver Garrett Wilson was forcefully pointing out something to quarterback Zach Wilson on offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett’s iPad.

Afterward, Wilson admitted that frustrations were on display on the sidelines. “Just frustration that we’re not moving the ball,” the reigning NFL offensive rookie of the year told reporters.

“Our defense was stringing together some stops, and I just feel like it was time to put some points on the board. Trying to figure out how we can attack New England.”

Carter was also asked post-game to explain his second-half outburst. “What we were talking about — obviously, I’m not going to tell you — but it had nothing to do with anything outside of the game,” he said.

“It was 100 percent two competitors, both want to win. A lot of people see that as drama, and I have to control myself better. I’m 24 years old. I know better.”

“Please don’t try to flip my words because it’s a very important topic to me," he urged reporters. "I have the utmost respect for coach Embree. Honestly, [he was] probably beating on the table for me in the draft. He’s a big part of why I’m even a Jet today.

"Me and him have a great relationship that goes way past football.” Carter continued: “To my guys and anybody who saw, people know that’s not me. That’s not how I act.

"This is my dream job. I love the game, and Embree knows that. He loves the game, too. We’re both alphas, and we butt heads sometimes. That’s the first time I’ve ever s****** out on anybody during the game.”

The third-year player later confirmed that he and the Jets coach had already spoken and settled their differences over their "miscommunication". “Any time you let something like that brew, it only gets worse,” Carter added, “and we’ve got bigger goals in mind.”

“It’s not as big a deal as it looked. When you really love what you do, it means everything. It had nothing to do with anything selfish [about minutes].”
