Piers Morgan has again criticised Mikel Arteta for ‘humiliating’ Aaron Ramsdale with the signing of David Raya.

The former Sheffield United and Bournemouth star has seen himself fall down the pecking order at Arsenal over recent weeks. He has started the last three matches on the bench in place of Raya - the Spaniard now appearing to be Arteta’s number one.

Ramsdale looks set to return to the starting line-up in midweek as the Gunners clash with Raya’s parent club Brentford in the Carabao Cup third round. Despite that, Arsenal fan Morgan has claimed that the situation is embarrassing for Ramsdale to be involved in, whilst also suggesting that Raya is not a better goalkeeper.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, he wrote: “I don't like the goalkeeper situation. I don't think it is good and I don't know what the thinking is. Arteta said he will rotate them but he hasn't.

“ Raya made one great save against Spurs but he was at fault for the first goal. I looked at Ramsdale and he was cheering him for the save but I don't understand why he has been demoted and is being humiliated like this.

“Arteta has to make a decision on who is No.1 and will stick with it. It isn't good for defenders. I think Raya is very good but I am not thinking it is huge upgrade on Ramsdale, who was a key player last season.”

Morgan had previously hit out at Arteta after he made the original decision to drop Ramsdale for Raya for the 1-0 win at Everton, saying he had "humiliated" the former Sheffield United and Bournemouth goalkeeper.

He is not the only one to have expressed his concern at the current goalkeeping situation at Arsenal. Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has claimed that Ramsdale might be forced to look for a new club if he does not manage to force himself back into contention.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I think he [Ramsdale] will be [leaving in January], if he got an opportunity at a decent club and Arsenal were happy with that. He hasn’t done badly at Arsenal. He’s done really well and better than a lot of people thought he would.

“I think Arsenal will be looking at it and thinking they could get a few quid for him. It could be something that happens in January.”

Ramsdale’s replacement Raya, 28, has played three games for Arsenal so far and managed to keep clean sheets against PSV Eindhoven and Everton. Ramsdale has one clean sheet from his five appearances in all competitions for the Gunners so far this term.

The four-time England goalkeeper has three years left on the new contract he only signed back in August, with the option of a further season.
