The humble extractor fan is a life-saver when it comes to removing unpleasant cooking odours from your kitchen - especially if you're living in a smaller space with an open plan layout.

The electronic fan, sometimes known as a cooker hood, helps to remove grease, steam, and unpleasant cooking smells. But it's important to give it a thorough clean regularly so it can work its magic, especially if you start to notice notice smells lingering and condensation building in your kitchen.

Owing to its grease-sucking abilities, oil and fat easily builds up, making it tough to clean. The tiny ventilation holes on some models make it even trickier to scrub too. Thankfully, cleaning fans have found a clever solution to tackling the dreaded task.

Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, one woman shared a picture of her dirty extractor fan and said: "What's the best way to clean these extractor fan vents, please? Just moved into our new house and I can't seem to get the grease out."

A number of social media users flocked to the comments section to share their handy and quick 10-minute trick to rid their fans of grease - and it costs just 40p. The most common response was from people who said they used a product called Elbow Grease, the Express reports.

One commenter said: "I sprayed the Elbow Grease degreaser over mine and left for about 10 minutes then just used a non-scratch sponge and they came up beautifully. Made the mistake of putting mine in the dishwasher last time and whilst they came up very clean, they are now tarnished."

Another wrote: "Elbow Grease, spray both sides and leave for five to 10 minutes, then go in with hot soapy water." While a third said: "Elbow Grease. Spray on overnight for better results, or you can just do 10 minutes if you want and then wash them out with hot water. Comes right out and looks brand new."

Posting impressive before and after pictures, another person commented: "I used Elbow Grease and it was amazing. This was a post-tenant house clean and I would have been lost without it. I sprayed them, left them for 10 minutes and then just used a dish brush on them in hot water. But honestly, I could just wipe the grease away with my finger this is the best thing I have used in ages. It worked a treat on the extractor hood and the rest of the kitchen. I've stocked up."

A bottle of Elbow Grease costs just 37p on Amazon currently, discounted from 99p.
