Strictly's Amy Dowden sends support to co-stars after 'hardest step'
Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden showed her support for her co-stars as the new series starts tonight.
The 33-year-old pro dancer had to pull out of this year’s show after being diagnosed with cancer. Earlier this week she revealed she had shaved her head as she undergoes chemotherapy.
But despite going through treatment, the Welsh dancer said “hopefully I’ll be there in a few weeks” as she teased her return to the BBC dance show. Taking to Instagram to wish everyone good luck, Amy wrote: “Happy live show day @bbcstrictly.”
She continued: “Wishing the entire team a fabulous show and I know it’s going to be amazing! I’ve been kept up to date with the pros and a few sneaky FaceTimes! Literally can’t wait to watch and support you all. Hopefully I’ll be there in a few weeks.”
Her Strictly co-stars and fans were quick to show their support underneath. Host Claudia Winkleman wrote: “We love you.” While Giovanni Pernice commented: “Love ya darling x.”Karen Hauer said: “Love you babe.”

Dianne Buswell, who has been partnered with Jade Goody ’s son Bobby Brazier this year, penned: “Thinking of you. We all miss you... but I already have a smile on my face thinking of this time next year when you’re gonna be back dancing with us again xxx.” Katya Jones added: “We gonna miss you sooo much tonight! Will do everything to make you proud.”

A third commented: “Hope you’re well enough to have a little guest appearance sometime this series – if not 2024 will be your year. Enjoy watching tonight xxx.” While a fourth added: “You will be sorely missed, but I know that next year you will be on that dance floor. Creating more magic for us all to enjoy. Big hugs xx.”
Amy revealed she had been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer earlier this year and had a mastectomy. But she recently shared doctors had also found “another type” of cancer and she needed to undergo further treatment, so wouldn’t be on this series of Strictly.
Since then Amy has been bravely keeping fans up to date with her ongoing treatment and shared a heartbreaking video on this week that showed her head shaved.
She invited her friends and family to cut off her locks before a hairdresser steps in to finish the emotional haircut and is seen breaking down in tears in the video. Amy wrote a powerful caption alongside the emotional clip, and told fans she was “taking back control”.
“The hardest step so far. I tried my best to save it. I know it’s only hair but these past few months I’ve had what feels like so much taken away from me that has made me not feel like Amy. I’m missing every possible aspect of dancing. I just wanted to keep my identity with my hair and I tried telling myself it wouldn’t go. But I would dread the pain of waking up to the shredding everyday,” she explained.
“I’ve not been able to take control of this journey so far, but as you can see with some of my loved ones I took the courage and CONTROL. It’s going to take some time to get use to and learn to love and embrace but, I’m now focussing-not on the hair I’m losing but the hair I’m going to get back and the happy dancing, tea lover who talks way to fast whilst rolling every rrrrr who is still there inside with or without hair!”
*The new series of Strictly Come Dancing starts on Saturday September 23 at 6.16pm on BBC1 or catch up on BBC iPlayer
