Alison Hammond clashed with Gyles Brandreth as the pair appeared to disagree on Friday's episode of This Morning. The pair were discussing disgraced MP Matt Hancock's recent appearance on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

Co-host Dermot O'Leary joined the conversation before things turned sour, with Gyles revealing he thought Hancock "tried his best" throughout the pandemic. After watching a clip of the former health secretary on the Channel 4 show, Alison burst into laughter.

In the show, Matt told interrogators he "handled the pandemic", before Dermot joked: "Should be mishandled the pandemic shouldn't it. All the loans, the fraud." Alison chimed in: "Why is he doing the reality TV? Do you think he should do the reality TV?"

At this point, joining Matthew Wright on the sofa, Gyles chimed in: "Well, he's given up politics and he's trying to forge a new life for himself, he did go through quite a challenging experience, being Secretary of State for Health during the pandemic, it was a challenge."

Dermot seemingly didn't like what Gyles had to say, quipping: "While maintaining an affair... very difficult." Gyles responded: "Indeed... anyway, that was his job, and he did it to the best of his ability." Dermot was quick to ask if Matt joined the show as an MP.

"Erm, I think he was and that's one of the reasons he stepped down. He wants to go into the entertainment industry," Gyles responded, as Alison joined the conversation again, adding: "He eventually admits lack of leadership, I mean... really?"

Hancock stepped down from his health secretary role in June 2021 after he was exposed for breaking the very same social distancing rules that he had in part set in law after his affair was exposed as Hancock was caught on CCTV canoodling with his aide Gina Coladangelo.

Alison continued: "Every time I look at him, I think of loved ones who have died, who we weren't able to go to hospital." Gyles was quick to defend Hancock, explaining: "He was trying to do his best." The comment didn't go down well with Alison who looked noticeably shocked.

She fired back: "He was trying to do his best? You think he was trying to do his best, Gyles?" The This Morning regular replied: "I'm sure as Secretary of State for Health he was trying to do his best, he may have been distracted by this affair."

Having none of it, Alison blasted: "Do you think that's his best? Being distracted? You don't think it's his best do you though Gyles?" As the pair disagreed, Gyles concluded: "I think he did try and give his all to it, well with a little bit on the side for someone else."

Matthew also agreed with Alison and Dermot, telling the group: "I've said it before but those of us who have lost people in the pandemic, during COVID, seeing him getting rich, doing TV shows, makes me feel sick."

This Morning continues weekdays from 10.30am on ITV and ITVX.
