Man Utd's only bright spot from Bayern Munich defeat proved Solskjaer right

Rasmus Hojlund is up and running as a Manchester United player with his performance against Bayern Munich vindicating Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ’s praise.

Hojlund scored the first goal of his United career at the start of the second half to give the Red Devils hope against the German champions, but it ultimately was not enough to save United from a 4-3 defeat at the Allianz Arena.

Casemiro struck twice late on for Erik ten Hag’s side to salvage some respectability to the scoreline. However, despite being second best for large periods in the game – Hojlund led the line well and showed his physicality and goalscoring instincts.

The Denmark international’s start to life as a United player had been a frustrating one with an injury sustained in pre-season ruling him out of the club’s first three Premier League games. He enjoyed a promising late cameo as a substitute against Arsenal before starting for the first time against Brighton.

Hojlund found the net in that game too but the goal was ruled out as the ball was adjudged to have marginally gone out of play in the build-up. The Dane was not to be kept out for long though and his United account is now underway.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Athletic this week, former United boss Solskjaer sang the praises of the striker and tipped him for a bright career at Old Trafford: “Rasmus Hojlund will be exciting and is the type of player United need to be signing.”

The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract with an option of a further 12 months with United paying the Serie A club £72million for his services. Erik ten Hag had been searching for a new centre forward all summer, with Anthony Martial the only recognised senior striker at the club.

Hojlund is instantly the first-choice striker for Ten Hag and, if he steers clear of injuries, will be targeting a significant amount of games and goals for the Red Devils this campaign – potentially proving decisive in their season ambitions. His displays against Brighton and Bayern have vindicated his signing and excited United fans due to his energy and goal threat.

Speaking back in January, Hojlund revealed his preference for joining United: “Now that you ask, I will not hide the fact that I am a huge Manchester United fan. So personally, it would be one of the biggest things for me, but of course, that doesn’t mean that I would turn down other big clubs if the offers come at some point.”
